Fantastic costuming, some great sets and some lovely claymation make this flick worth looking at, but the absence of a solid plot keeps it from being a childhood classic. Also, too much chicken!

Points for nostalgia, I loved this as a child. Now its slightly more bizarre than I remembered, but a fairly unique vision. Also Fairuza Balk was creepy even as a small child.

it's actually a fairly decent sequel that i'm surprised i had not been exposed to as a child, yet even as an adult i quite enjoyed it. this is, no doubt, a unduly forgotten sequel overshadowed by it's timeless predecessor.

Not at all a children's movie, and once again it is a random chance, not the hero's wisdom or learned-lessons or friendship or anything that actually saves the day. Ultimately fails as a kids movie, though a great teaching tool on why you don't wait 50 YEARS to make a sequel.

Creepy enough to not really be suitable for kids, but not enough substance to be satisfying for adults. I suppose it has it's place if you're a fan of Oz, but I'm not much of one.

An underrated cult classic that more people need to see. To compare this movie to the classic "The Wizard of Oz" is unfair, because "Return to Oz" comes up short. But that doesn't mean that Return to Oz is bad at all. "The Wizard of Oz" is one of the greatest films of all time. "Return to Oz" is very imaginative. It offers a more sinister look at Oz, and is very interesting. The stop-motion effects are awesome and really make you miss the good old stop-motion effects. It's really a dying art.

From the get-go "Return to Oz" is infinitely darker in tone and drab than the bright and charming original. Even though the bar was set pretty high, the film is less of a sequel and more an adaption of the second and third Oz books, "Return" should be judged as its own film, yet it is still undeniably less entertaining.

There's much to like about this movie; beautiful sets, good acting, tension and action. But as a whole, it never quite comes together. It's the kind of adaptation that diverges wildly from the books, but skips plot points that only reading the books can fill in. The "electroshock therapy" plotline and its accompanying "is it real" theme add nothing; nor does mashing up Mombi with Princess Langwidere. In the end, a straight adaptation of Ozma of Oz would've worked better and been less confusing.

I have to say as a child I don't remember this movie being so damn weird! Watching it now it's much more peculiar and dark than I ever recall. It's good fun though, and although it probably won't appeal to all children due to it's ever so slightly sinister feel, this movie certainly sets a good standard for childrens fantasy adventure. Some of the set and character design is brilliant too and has held up very well over the years. I know I'd rather watch this than its spiritual prequel.

The Nome King looks like a moveable Mt. St. Helens and he alone is magical. In fact, he blows Dorothy and her tacky-looking friends off the screen. So we end up liking the Nome King and hating Dorothy and her crowd, which I doubt was the intention of the L. Frank Baum series.

Certainly far, far darker and creepier than the "original" Wizard of Oz film, which this is a spiritual sequel to. The sets and costume design is flat out wonderful to be honest. You really get a sense of the run down and destoyed world of Oz. The wheelers are creepy and the multi-headed princess actually gave me shivers. The special effects are dated but surprisingly hold up well enough. Entertaining film which gives Oz an entirely new look, or rather a closer look to that of the novels.

Closer in spirit and detail to the original OZ books, this is a love letter from Walter Murch to L. Frank Baum, and a far better movie than its reputation would have you believe. Incoming Boss Guy Michael Eisner deliberately torpedoed the release of RETURN TO OZ so that it would fail and his own movies would look better by comparison. Some of the best-realized fantasy characters in any fantasy film, ever. Ms. Balk is perfect as Dorothy. A favorite.
