You've decided to remember Ricky Jay and His 52 Assistants for later. You can see all your remembered films here.
Summary: This was a filmed performance of Jay's Broadway show, directed by his friend, David Mamet. It is literate, intelligent, and better than any magic performance you have ever seen. Jay is a heavy-set man who projects an image of a slightly seamy autodidact -- not too far from what he really is; he has, without the benefit of formal education, made himself THE authority on the history of magic. In any case, Ricky Jay does things with cards and close up magic that will leave you stunned. (Karagarga)

A very entertaining magic performance. It's rewatchable mainly because of Jay's gregarious nature, which the act relies on as much as his impressive skills. He's a jokester as much as he is a card wiz.

The summary doesn't lie: this is one of the best magic shows you'll ever see. And it's not because the tricks are spectacular (they are). It's not because Jay is witty and affable (he is). It's because as cool as the tricks are, the show is engaging on an intellectual level. Beyond the cards, this doubles as a university lecture on the history of magic. The cup-and-ball finale, dubbed The History Lesson, is jaw-dropping. Would've rated it higher, but the card-throwing bit didn't do much for me.

He's not funny, but he has sufficient savoir faire that you don't mind listening to him for an hour... and he doesn't spew profanity like Louis CK, or annoy the shit out of you like Eddie Izzard. As such, this is a few letter grades higher than some of the other comedy videos I have experienced lately. This isn't *bad*, but no matter how hard they were to learn, or to do, they're still just card tricks. It reminds me of the old saw about training a rat

Jay is one of the greatest (if not the greatest) sleight-of-hand artists in the world, and the things he does with a deck of cards are simply jaw-dropping, not to mention the astonishing cups-and-balls finale. Along the way he provides a little history of magic, and plenty of good humor, delivered with his usual eloquence. Very entertaining.
