Summary: In the bordertown of San Pablo, preparing for an annual 'Mexican Fiesta,' arrives Gagin: tough, mysterious and laconic. His mission: to find the equally mysterious Frank Hugo, evidently for revenge; or is it blackmail? FBI agent Retz is also after the elusive Hugo. Everyone in town is enigmatic, especially Pila, a mystical teenager who follows Gagin around and has premonitions of his death. Also involved are a classic femme fatale and an antique carousel with a pink horse... (imdb)

Takes film noir characters and plops them into another world, with haunting results. Montgomery takes things casually, starting the story with a number of mysteries and supplying answers in due time. The script is loaded with hard-boiled dialogue, but there also these leisurely diversions with Pancho and Pilar. There is an air of mysticism and the climax is unlike any I've seen before. The film also addresses postwar disillusionment very directly. Startlingly original and captivating work.

Odd film noir directed by and starring Robert Montgomery as a gangster out to blackmail a mob boss (a sign of the film's oddnesss, the boss has some hearing impediment that requires the use of a primitive Whisper2000 type device). Thomas Gomez is memorable as the local who befriends Montgomery. Best scene: the shot on the merry-go-round where the camera captures thugs beating Pancho as it goes around and around.

Rock-solid noir. Well cast and unique. It explores one of the usual themes of greed, juxtaposing it with the altruism and contentment of the native Mexicans. The friendliness of Gomez (funny - and Oscar-nom'ed) and Hendrix (gorgeous) was sweet and thankfully the movie doesn't overdo it. Montgomery's other film noir - The Lady in the Lake, a movie shot with subjective camera throughout - is also worth a watch.
