A disappointing Ken Loach film. I was expecting more but the film focused on the unconvincing love affair rather than making a comment on the workers and the interrelationships of the building site.

For a story that ends on quite the unsure downer, this is a rather uplifting film. Showing an excellent relationship between friends and romantic partners, the film condenses down all those trials and trivialisations successfully into its running time, allowing for a grand story on a small scale.

Riff-Raff is not one of Loach's best, but it's a very decent piece of social realist dramedy about construction workers in Thatcher's England. This is the movie from which The Big Lebowski plagiarized the ash-scattering gag.

A splendid piece of social commentary, speckled with rewarding moments of comedy. The actors are all strong, and the characters they portray are personable and believeable. I wouldn't call this a brilliant masterpiece or anything, but it was quite enjoyable on several levels. However, the accents made it difficult to understand a lot of the dialogue. Also, Stewart Copeland's music is good, but seemed inappropriate to me. I think it would have been a better film without any score.
