Noel Marshall sighed. His cast had finished reading the script revisions, most had been crying since. There'd been talk of quitting. He'd have none of that. "Or have you forgotten the contracts? And the cost for disobedience? Remember what happened to Jeremy." They did. They shivered. They fell in line once more. Filming continues. Today, the lions are grumpy. That means good footage. Noel Marshall smiles. Fear. He closes his eyes. Terror. In extasy, he whispers that cursed word: "Action".

Noel Marshall was clearly a lunatic. Working with dozens upon dozens of untrained big cats, the danger to the human cast is so palpable in every scene that the film becomes a bizarrely riveting viewing experience in spite of the weak narrative and acting. The stories from the shoot are horrifying, unsurprisingly; it's a genuine miracle that nobody was killed on set.

We were somewhere around the middle part of 'Roar' when my learned friend Dean Franz stated that this is the most irresponsible movie ever made. He's right. The way that animals and humans are treated in this movie is beyond deplorable. So telling you it is an absolute must-see makes this the most irresponsible review I've ever written.

Like the Heaven's Gate of exploitation cinema. Bizarre, disturbing and deeply irresponsible. It's kind of a huge waste of time, money and life. Except, of course, for those moments where it gets extremely real and harrowing and you just can't believe what it is you're witnessing. I genuinely have no idea what to make of this movie.

Nothing else like it. Tense, like diffusing a bomb in your pants tense.

One of the most tense, fascinating and dangerous movies ever produced. One question comes roaring to mind as you try to watch the film. How was this ever made? The movie feels like something found deep on the internet. This animal exploitation is an adventure of genuine fear as the actors don't have to do any real acting when they're dangerously exposed to real life giant predators. An insane mix of "Grizzly Man"(2005) and the MTV show "Wildboyz"(2003-06)

This... How does one rate something like this? Almost certainly the most messed up & misguided film I've seen. The whole idea behind it is clearly psychotic & judging by this Marshall should be in an institution. At least Treadwell didn't subject his whole family to his suicidal insanity. Hilariously bad on almost every level but that hardly even matters. The level of human/animal endangerment on display here is close to some kind of hideous snuff film. Nail-biting & disturbing in the extreme.

The most disturbed I've been after watching a film was The Devil's Advocate. Seeing it too young and on a date of all things, it seeped into my soul and left me feeling icky well past the normal amount of time I feel icky after a date. This movie, this damn movie is the most disturbed I've been WHILE watching a film. Their lives are in danger! The whole time! And it's a conservation movie! It's like an abstinence video featuring the guy from Dr. Quinn. Like you didn't know he oozed sexuality.

An absolute failure from start to finish, but wildly entertaining. It's like The Room, except with a much greater chance of getting to see an actor eaten alive by a lion. Bad acting, poor editing, terrible post-dubbing, very little of a story, and it gets repetitive and dull after a while.

When I was an adolescent, a friend acquired a VHS copy of "Faces of Death," which of course we all believed to be 100% real. Watching it combined thrill with discomfort. Since then I've seen many films oft-described as "fucked up": Cannibal Holocaust, A Serbian Film, Salo, Human Centipede, various Cat III films, the Guinea Pig series, etc. Not one of them is fucked up. This is. I considered giving it 0, since it may be the worst movie ever made, but I have to give it credit for shaking me up.

The original Jackass movie. Fucking insane. And if I ever see an interview with Hedren complaining about Hitchcock throwing real life seagulls at her in The Birds, I'm going to laugh hysterically.

A snuff film without any snuffing, Roar's only redeeming quality is that it elicits such strong emotion--the viewer despises everyone involved.

Zoologist Hank (Noel Marshall) has a big-cat preserve in Africa, which has attracted a deal of negative attention--and a couple of poachers--while being terrorized from within by the malicious he-lion Togar. Worse, Hank's wife (Tippi Hedren) and their kids are en route, and have no idea what to expect. Infamous for its troubled production and massive expense, it's thin as entertainment (though the cats themselves are quite incredible), but the sheer irresponsible audacity of it drops the jaw.

Has to be seen to be believed. Essentially a home movie made by a family with a death wish. It really is crazy.

Worth watching, not bacause it's a great film (it's not), but because it's completely insane and there probably isn't anything else like it.

For what it's worth, this might be the film where I've said "what the fuck" out loud the most. Not that Roar is good, but it's definitely up there with Cannibal Holocaust in the exploitation cinema heavyweights division. I'd also like to note that this was at one point in pre-production titled "Lions, Lions and More Lions".

Is it a horror? It's certainly horrific. Is it a family drama? It's certainly got people in it who are related. Is it a comedy? ... No.

One of the most insane films ever made, but difficult to stomach because of how legitimately torturous the experience was for the humans and animals involved. Watching with friends and screaming at the wild action was one of my favorite film experiences.

These actors lack a great many things, but commitment isn't one of them. And lions. They do definitely not lack lions.

Like a cast of thousands tumbling down a pyramid. So yeah, a mess, but let's see what these lion writers and directors do next.

The dialogue is whack and the tone is wildly inappropriate, but I just cannot imagine ever seeing another movie like this and for sheer visual intensity it's totally unparalleled. Reckless insanity is always watchable.

Seems like I'm one of the only people who saw this as a child at the theatre when it was released. I would have been ten at the time. Haven't seen it since.

Every quip you've read about this has some truth to it, my favorite being "the most expensive home movie ever made." I kept wondering, "WHO would do this?" and did a bit of internet research on Noel Marshall, who is clearly a bit crazy. Apparently, making this precipitated Marshall and Hedren's divorce, and he eventually got so aggressive with her that she had to get a restraining order against him.

There is no way they could get this film made today. The use of real lions and other creatures would not be allowed. The use of the real animals make this film exciting. The script is bad but there are a number of exciting scenes. This film has to be seen to be believed.

These animals are not just cats. This movie is a stunt business. But I think the cast has some really big balls, and they're all brave.
