Tim Roth's wickedly wonderful performance aside, it's movies like these that remind me why I love the English language. From bumpers of Rhenish to sniffing quim; from pints of pish to skulduggery, there are linguistic gems strewn throughout the quasi-Victorian dialogue, showing (albeit not without a wee dab of cheese) that the 1000+ year-old lexicon is far more rich than Miley Cyrus, Snookie, or beer-guzzling frogs from the Anheuser-Busch Corporation marketing division would have us believe.

The only reason this is above a 50 is the glee with which Tim Roth escapes into the role of an amoral rapist dandy.

Rob Roy is pretty much the best historical epic you'll ever get - because it's a character study. Excellent performances all round (especially Tim Roth) backed by a fantastic screenplay - the dialogue is at times hilarious and at times intense, while using antiquated language to create a sense of setting while still being completely understandable. The pacing is glacial but this allows for more enjoyment of the performances. And the sword fights are amazing!

Glossed over and barely seen by the movie-going public as Braveheart stormed the theatres at the same time. Rob Roy is a more historically accurate movie and the performances by Liam Neeson & Tim Roth are simply superb!

Oh, I'm a sucker for such kind of movies and even more when it's well done as in this case. Liam Neeson is more believable than Mel Gibson in Braveheart because he does not pretend to be 20-something.
