If Frank Capra made a movie with Errol Flynn. Some really great sword fighting sequences in this.

The only reason this is above a 50 is the glee with which Tim Roth escapes into the role of an amoral rapist dandy.

Not great but still an enjoyable mini-epic that tells an admittedly fictionalized tale of a real man. To be fair it's an entertaining re-envisioning of history though. Lian Neeson is always a pleasure and Tim Roth is fantastically evil here. Sadly we've got Roy's brother who seems to be simply annoying for the sake of being either annoying or a plot device. It's quite frustrating.

Kind of eclipsed by _Braveheart_, which came out the same year, but some critics liked this one better. I don't agree, but I can see their point; Tim Roth is a villain whose face you'd like to tear right off his skull with your bare hands, the hero does not only many brave things but one that's deliciously clever, and in general this movie has a lot of unusual virtues that make it a special piece of work

Braveheart minus all the epic battles. The end result is.. well.. kinda boring. The cast is decent and the locations sure are nice lookin', but there's not enough entertainment/substance to justify the 160 minute running time.

Good movie, not great. I think it would've been a lot worse without the performance and character of Tim Roth, who completely steals the show.

ROB ROY is a fine adventure film with some odd trimmings. There's an undercurrent of bizarre sexuality (the best line in the film is startlingly obscene, I'll let you discover it), and a slightly off-kilter sense to the pacing. At 139 minutes, it's a bit too long, but Liam Neeson's commanding performance as Rob, and Tim Roth's as the perverted villain, are good enough to smooth over the occasional dull spots. Fine sword fighting as well.

Neeson just fits into some roles so perfectly and Tim Roth gives us a villain that would make most antagonists feel self conscience about how evil they actually are. You're getting to the end of the film and your thinking that was a pretty good period piece, then a completely bad ass sword fight occurs which just makes 'Rob Roy' all the more memorable.
