How did Lucky McKee not get a bigger budget than this? May should have been big enough to give this a lot more of a polish than it actually has, and it seems like it was filmed as a collegiate film project. If you can get past that aspect, you will find a enjoyable movie. has a unique plot compared to some thrillers and Angela Bettis proves she has directing chops. See Kristen Bell and Nectar Rose in some early work. Sadly, neither get naked. All in all, cool film.
The Angela Bettis-Lucky McKee creative partnership is criminally underappreciated. There's a certain sort of ugliness and discomfort going on, which only resembles ugliness and discomfort at first, then it becomes sort of sweet, and it feels really nice for a bit- then the ugliness and discomfort comes back, and you realize it never really went away. What I'm trying to say is, their collabs hurt. A lot. But you have to watch them, because sometimes it has to hurt. (and Kristen Bell is adorable)
In theory, this film is a masterpiece. The script and its execution is bizarre, unnerving and bold. It paints what should be a fascinating character study. Unfortunately, there is a drawback--the amateur feel of the whole endeavor. At times you feel like you're watching a home movie. Still, McKee creates a truly convincing disturbed loner out of his character. A great film, despite the apparent inexperience of nearly everyone involved.
