Decent adaptation of a decent play. Fuck the hipsters and faux critics who pretend Stoppard's work is anything more than that. It's not.

Stoppard's scholarly jest (undergraduate-level), fleshing out two Shakespearean spear-carriers, reaches the screen a generation late, and demonstrates already that it lacks something of Hamlet's timelessness. Stoppard, directing the show himself, sets out to compensate for any dimmed cleverness by trying hard, harder, too hard -- beginning with the blues-and-howling-dog musical overture and carried on in the Laurel-and-Costello comedy duo of Oldman and Roth

There are a few axioms in plays : some sort of space and time defined, relation system of author->director->actor->character->audience->me . Well, Tom Stoppard is checking what axioms can he bend. It's interesting. I think R&G are allegoris for theoretical and experimental sicence. I like Rosencrantz :)

Well it's slow for one thing just like any other movie based on Hamlet. Yet comic dialogues and physics experiments are great and make certain moments entertaining. Still it's too dull for comedy(maybe black one would still go) and not too serious for tragic drama thus falls in tragicomedy.Nor really good one, neither really bad one. The most interesting thing is seeing whole story before really happens in plot e.g. staging Hamlet before it's really happens.

An overly ambitious film that would have been better off finishing sooner. By the two hour mark, it wheezes, gasps, and collapses at the finishing line. Still, it is an interesting concept, and there were brief moments of greatness; but they were not consistent enough to make this anything more than a decent adaptation.

Oldman and Roth play off each other well; the movie has an airy feel, and yet is serious enough to get its message across. Very well done.
