Rosewood is the true story of an almost unknown incident in a small Florida town, (fictionalized, but faithful to the known facts, as documented in a 1994 report by the Florida Legislature). The town was inhabited almost entirely by quiet, "middle-class" African- Americans (most of them home and land owners and better off than average at the time.) On New Year's day, 1923, the town was wiped off the face of the earth by angry whites from a neighboring community. (Allmovie.com)

Well this is a particularly dark chapter of American history. As grim as this film is, it is a heavily sanitized version of a truly gruesome story. Go read what actually happened; this film actually omits some of the most disgusting and disturbing parts. Ving Rhames is a boss, so is Don Cheadle. And has there ever been anyone more convincing in the role of inbred hillbilly than Michael Rooker?

Accurately shows the tensions present between blacks and whites of the time. Voight's character is not overly romanticized as the great white hope. The real hero is the reticent Rhames, a fictitious blend of real-life characters and Hollywood machismo. Both performances are strong and film succeeds as a detailed visual reminder of country's tragic history. Real-life survivors of the bloodshed finally won reparation from the Florida legislature in 1993.

Well told and sad story to watch. Not too sure about how accurate this was but it is still sad to see things like this happen no matter what time period this was. Awesome acting and very interesting characters and interesting to see how they developed through out the movie.

Overlooked little period drama with a decent amount of action. Rhames and Voight are solid.

i recommend just reading a book about rosewood, honestly. the story itself is powerful, but the poor filmmaking brings you out of it repeatedly. this would score even lower but let's be real, ving rhames and don cheadle are awesome.

Great, but so depressing. Nothing ever turns out OK in the antebellum south for black people, and even the happiest Oskar-Schindler-ending still feels like a Pyhrric victory at best.

I remembered I first watched this in class with a room full white of people. Awkward. And though at first, I thought the story was too simple and very heavy handed, I've come to appreciate how it doesn't try to sugarcoat American racism, in a way so many movies do. Plus, it has black protagonists who *gasp* actually talk to each other!

I wanted to like this film. It's a story that needs to be told. I don't think this movie tells it very well. The characters are thinly drawn, the plot jumps around with little explanation of anyone's motives, and the physical geography of the town it is set in is never really laid out in a coherent manner. It felt like a TV movie ... high melodrama and exploitative content served at a very low budget.

I appreciate this for showing a piece of U.S. history that most Americans would prefer to forget. But for all its intent to show unmitigated evil and atrocity porn, this is fictionalized, Hollywoodized, glossy to a cynical degree, and set to relentless terrible orchestral music. I wasn't expecting painstaking realism from this (else it would have been too horrific for theatrical release), but it didn't have to be so fake either. Also, how is Jon Voight a Republican?
