Cuaron, probably best known for writing Y Tu Mama Tambien with his brother Alfonso, reunites the two young male stars of that film. The film cuts jaggedly across the field, from dramatic to jokey and back again. Despite engaging work from Bernal and Luna, and an even better performance by Francella as the unscrupulous scout who recruits them, the film is a sluggish disappointment, never finding a vividly original path to take. Instead, it settles for being a parade of cautionary tale cliches.

"Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna reunite in Rudo y Cursi to denigrate rubes from Jalisco as slow-witted provincial brothers and banana plantation workers whose unlikely rise to soccer stardom supplies the purported comedy." - Bill Weber

A very mainstream and very average Mexican film. Plot-wise, it's somewhat predictable because it's limited in the same way as most other sports movies - everything has to come down to the last kick of the last minute of the last, championship-deciding game, star 1 vs star 2. Also, I noticed that a lot of the jokes revolve around male genitalia. If this were an American film it would probably star Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson, with Jack Black as their agent, and be called "Ballkickers".

t's a damn funny movie that looks great and even though its very predictable (especially the final defining moment) it's still enjoyable.

Just a soccer flick. I was expecting something more from Cuaron.

A great little film by Cuaron. Bernal and Luna seem to make the movie a great success.
