Unfunny throughout and inferior in every way to the Mr. Show comedy sketch it is based upon. Two Times One Minus One (a fictional music group from Mr. Show) makes a noteworthy appearance, but it does not save the film.
If memory serves there's about one funny line in this entire movie. I love Mr Show and this ranks as one of the most disappointing movies I've ever seen.
Plays out as Mr. Show: The Movie, mostly because that's exactly what it is. And with that said, it's a major disappointment. The cameo list is impressive and a lot of the one-note jokes are zingers -- "Scott Thompson and the Gay Conspiracy" especially. The problem is that so much of the show was brilliant sketch comedy, and most of this...is not. If you like Mr. Show, you'll probably have a good time with the movie, but the uninitiated might want to hit up the re-runs instead.
The unfortunate part about this movie is that it has some really really really funny moments, but studio fuckery transformed it into some cookie cutter summer comedy.
This is the movie Joe Dirt wishes it could have been. That being said, I guess white trash humor can only take you so far, because it's still not good, even with all the hilarious people involved.
It's a Mr. Show sensibility shoe-horned into a Saturday Night Live kind of movie. It just doesn't work. It's so watered down and Hollywood. It's simply not that funny. It has moments, but very few.
As much as I love a lot of the people involved the film as a whole just doesn't work as a whole. Randomly it will cut into segments that have very little to do with the actual plot and those (along with some funny lines/cameos) are the best parts. I hear that Cross and Odenkirk got booted from the editing of this movie and have disowned it since it got butchered by Miller and New Line Cinema (and I don't blame them). Would only suggest to avid fans of Mr. Show and/or David Cross.
