Fine storytelling especially in the first half. Redneck Mifune (Beat Takeshi?) at his best (and picks his nose hair). I find the drama a bit enthralling.

The tragic twist is fairly predictable, and I found the first half of the film to be a little rough going... occasionally slow and occasionally confusing. Otherwise, a pretty good yarn with another intense Mifune performance. The framing is impeccable, with compositions worthy of Kurosawa or Mizoguchi.

A beautiful classic samurai picture highlighted by a stunning final battle sequence and its overwhelming sense of bitter irony.
