Summary: Mary Blake arrives at Blackie Norton's Paradise gambling hall and beer garden looking for work as a singer. Blackie embarrasses her by asking to see her legs, but does hire her. She faints from hunger. Nob Hill Socialite Jack Burley and Maestro Baldini of the Tivoli Opera House see her singing and offer her a chance to do opera, but Blackie has her under a two-year contract which she sorrowfully stands by. Later, when he makes up posters featuring Mary in tights, she does leave for the Tivoli... (imdb)

Ascribes the San Francisco earthquake to the wrath of God, punishment for the iniquities of the city's residents (namely Blackie Norton). Jerry Falwell types must love this.

standard 30's fare that should be ashamed to boast the names gable, and tracy. it has too much bad, irrelevant singing and one good scene, which doesn't last long enough to make up for what came before. if only the earthquake happened first, then maybe it would have been worthwhile. the choral singing at the end was simply so terrible (not the actual voices, just the scene) i am actually speechless.

Very good movie with an especially touching ending despite the tragedy that was the Earthquake of 1906. The one plot aspect I couldn't quite wrap my mind around was why Mary fell for Blackie in the first place.

Incisive, star-packed, superbly-handled melodrama which weaves in every kind of appeal and for a finale has some of the best special effects ever conceived.

The earthquake at the end is one of the most amazing climaxes ever committed to film but the leadup to this doesn't quite justify a top score.
