Summary: Sandra comes back to Volterra, in Tuscany, the little town where she spent her childhood. She is with her American husband, Andrew. She wishes to pay homage to her father who died in Auschwitz where she was still a little child. In Volterra, Andrew meets for the first time Gianni, Sandra's brother. He soon realizes that Sandra and Gianni have a secret since their childhood. (imdb)

Visconti was also an opera director and this is one of his more operatic movies, a flamboyant drama on three main characters, and the daring theme of incest. I don't regard this as one of his major films but it's rather good nonetheless.

Intense drama and exquisite camera work. On the surface the story, an unraveling web of hidden emotions that strains relationships in all directions, would seem too hard to relate to to make a great film, but the sets and photography are so wonderful, and Cardinale so perfect for the lead role, that I couldn't help but be drawn in completely.
