Summary: The first half of this film, set hundreds of years ago, shows how the old man who eventually became Santa Claus was given immortality and chosen to deliver toys to all the children of the world. The second half moves into the modern era, in which Patch, the head elf, strikes out on his own and falls in with an evil toy manufacturer who wants to corner the market and eliminate Santa Claus. I loved this movie as a kid, the scenes with the old geezer becoming santa was magical and I even thought it was all real, so much so that I wrote a letter to santa and put it on the christmas tree (how dopey was I?) But having watched it recently the 2nd half is so much weaker then the 1st, and the movie's anti-coprorate message is kinda stupid when you think about it. Whats christmas without spending loads of money?

I like how this movie is filmed. It looks like it's from the 60's. I love the first half, and wish the movie was more about Santa's origins. The second half is just silly Christmas fun. John Lithgow is ridiculous. Not as instantly classic as other Christmas movies are, but still worthwhile.
