Jesus is Magic proves that comedienne Sarah Silverman's faux-racist Jewish princess shtick works in smaller doses if at all, the hit-to-miss ratio of her taboo-busting routine having since been upstaged by comics of greater consistency and invention. That isn't to say that she never hits the funnybone, but that in two decades that have been good to groundbreaking satirists she's upstaged by the likes of Frankie Boyle, whose TV show Tramadol Nights more ably combines stand-up with sketches.

If you've seen Sarah Silverman's act before, this movie is not funny. If you're not surprised by a cute girl saying naughty things, this movie is not funny. The pacing is murderous as well, as it is somewhat incompetently directed (sorry, Sifl and Olly fans). Good only for Silverman neophytes, and even then this film might turn them off.

A decent stand-up performance. A LOT of racist jokes. Not that I was offended or anything, but at a certain point you have to ask for a bit more creativity.

Lynch's mundane directing will be familiar to anyone who's seen an HBO comedy special in the past twenty years, and his artless efforts to intersperse little skits throughout doesn't make it any more distinctive. Silverman is overly reliant on the juxtaposition of an attractive women sweetly saying things that are offensive. There are bits that are cleverly constructed and her daring is admirable at times, but it's still a single joke spun into more derivations than it can handle.

It doesn't always work, but I love her whole ironic racism thing. She says things and you get angry at them and then you realize that deep down you really care about those things and that's why you're angry. She reminds us of how fucking awful racism really is.

This is basically a concert movie. 80% of the movie is just a recording of her performance doing stand up comedy. The humor is similar to "The Aristocrats" - very dirty, racist and "provocative" whatever that means.
However this movie suffers from the same problem The Aristocrats did - it's too long (even at 90 minutes). The humor works best when it's shocking (thanks to the delivery - she does a great job pretending she is completely not surprised by what's coming out of her mouth) but

Jesus may be magic, but Sarah Silverman is to stand-up comedy what Twilight is to the vampire film genre. Hey bitch, you're not funny, your delivery sucks, your material sucks, and your gimmick/crutch is that of a moderately attractive, normal-looking girl saying "dirty jokes". If not for the obsession many Americans (and network execs) have in wanting to see a successful female stand-up comedian, she wouldn't have a fucking career. I've seen comparable sets on the local Open Mic night.

Most of this material here (and there isn't much of it) is recycled from the same routines she's been doing for years. So if you're new to the jokes, it's pretty funny, otherwise there's not much to look forward. Most of the interstitials flops, too, but I liked the intro.
