Completely bizarre movie but Fellini brings a compelling interpretaion of decadence and corruption to the screen.

In some ways this is almost the ultimate statement about decadence and depravity within the human condition. It's a Rome that never could be, never was and never will be... but because the well of modernity has been poisoned, and we have become corrupted it's just how we see it through our moral filter. Visually this is stunning, it's so labyrinthine and surreal in it's disjointedness that you don't bask in any story line, you bask in the virility in front of you.

There's good Fellini and bad Fellini; Satyricon is bad Fellini. The director's imagination run amuck, the result is an incoherent, boring, and shallow look at Nero's time, with arresting visuals but piss-poor acting and little story to speak of.

"Fellini's directorial and artistic genius portrays an extremely decadent Rome where most of the people are freaks, carnally obsessed bisexuals or flaunting some other grotesquerie. As usual with Fellini, there isn't much of a plot and the film wanders from vignettes to adventures to dream sequences..."

Someone very dear to me who watced me watcing this movie said: "This is poison. It is twisting your soul. It hurts me to see you like this. They told you that you understand, but you don't. You can't. You're much too young." And all I can say is- Thank you Fellini.

Man, I thought David Lynch was an odd one. Apparently Fellini had said that this movie was to be an indictment of Ancient Rome shown from an alien's perspective, in that they would be horrified by the rituals and savagery of humanity. And yeah, I've never seen such nihilistic debauchery in a movie before. The mere fact that there's basically no overarching story or point just makes this film all the more fascinating. Fantastic.

Well it's a collection of slow, unrelated episodes where not much is really going on but I still really liked it. As always, Fellini compensates with lots of eye candy; for starters, his vision of ancient Rome is pretty damn awesome - sweaty, filthy, somewhat surreal and dreamlike. Also he's a genius in composition: the camerawork is fantastic and his use of colour as always is amazing. It may drag at parts, but it's Fellini alright.

The acting is awful, so much ludicrous leering and fake, lusty laughter. The story flutters from one pointless event to another, with a dash of poorly-delivered poetry or philosophy. And the UGLINESS is dreadful, torturous to sit through. But around the halfway point it gets interesting. The narrative thread is thin, but it's there. By the end, I was attached to Encolpio. There are enough redeeming qualities to make the film worthwhile, and I'm sure it will be a long time before I forget it.
