Summary: Sauna follows a group of Swedish and Russian soldiers who are assigning new borders after a decades long war between the two countries has ended. The soldiers find a small isolated village in the very center of a large swamp, an eerie place where no children have been born in years and the old do not die. It seems almost as if God has forgotten them. (imdb user)

Intelligent horror film with an unusual setting. The theme of the movie is guilt, which is well explored through the pair of main characters. It sustains a constant sense of dread, and it has several effective scare scenes. The ambiguity may be a turnoff for some.

Finnish surreal horror about a bunch of 16th century soldiers who are trying to draw a new border between Sweden and Russia after a war, and stumble across an entrance to hell (or IS it?) in the middle of one of the villages they pass through. Spooky, original, and very nearly brilliant. Very much recommended to fans of Lynch and/or Fulci.

Stalker meets modern horror, but apart from being visually intriguing, it didn't really give me a lot.

Very catchy mood and strong performance of leading role (Ville Virtanen). The plot is a bit Tarkovskian style cryptic, but I liked the non-linear way they put it out.

A very original place to set a horror movie (1500's Finland is not exactly Hollywoodish) combined with good acting and a really creepy athmosphere make for something complitely new. I was happy to find that the movie wasn't as classicaly agonizing as finnish movies usually are but some how more fresh and generic. However the nicely built up mystery and terror are squandered in the scrappy ending that doesnt expalin it self to the wiewer. Beautiful scenery and colours!

Strong atmosphere and some refreshingly unique shots will keep you watching, along with some decent acting. The ending is fairly ambiguous, and the themes are... muddled, at best. However, this combination is often what makes the scary parts so much tenser. A lot of people will have wanted more of a pay-off after the very solid build-up. Comparisons to Tarkovsky are justified, but only in a few shots and the overall tone.

Holy crap did I overrate this the first time round [80]. Strong atmosphere and great performance by Virtanen, but upon rewatching what seemed mysterious just came off as a mess. Too many jump scares with sudden volume increases, too much creepy music and so much stuff just comes out of left field. Like the guy who suddenly confesses his love for Erik? What the hell?! Why does the kid randomly start bleeding? At 75 mins there was enough room to flesh things out, but as it stands unsatisfying.

Some bad scenes ruin it a bit but mostly it's great. Very solid performance by Virtanen in the lead.
