The positive thing is that the script allows the actors room to shine on their own. The 3-way romance is a melodramatic gimmick. Two best bros in a drug business sharing a girl isn't interesting it's just completely redundant. As the title seems to imply everyone is despicable and unlikable so why should you give a fuck? It's an overwrought tale with lame dialog for unbearable stretches. The bookend narrative by Lively is piss poor. The ending was fucking stupid. Del Toro is amazing though.

Enjoyable like a Nic Cage movie is enjoyable. Lots of questionable acting and dialogue, peppered with explosions and torture. Benicio Del Toro plays the best Mexican ever.

Coulda been a whole helluva lot better--meaner, more over-the-top, more in-your-face--but it's pretty good, I guess. I kinda dug it; the story's pretty taut and involving and noir-y. Enough ripping moments and colorful performances to keep you watching the whole way through, but I kinda wished the Stone of NATURAL BORN KILLERS could have had his way with this.

Outside of some emotionless acting by Blake Lively (and not because the film asked for it), this is pretty decent. The double ending was very unnecessary though.

I understand why many won't like this film, but I enjoyed it. It's very classical directed, and at some point it has a Tarantino feel over it. For me the weakest point of the movie was parts of the script. Some of the dialog were just plain boring and felt unnecessary. Acting were good but the youngest actors didn't convince me all the time, might be because their characters were a bit "simple". I did also love the ending, which for once was a bit original.

Oliver Stone is the new Tony Scott. Stone realizes this, so he went out and hired Scott's cinematographer. Meanwhile, Robert Richardson tag teams with Scorsese and Tarantino who are no longer neighbors with Stone ever since he emigrated to Mediocrestan. I can't wait for him to do a harebrained thriller with Denzel..

Pleasantly surprised by this. It's a nice return to form by Oliver Stone, telling a pulp fiction thriller with just the right amount of violence, charismatic villains and tongue-in-cheek filmmaking. I expected a bad movie for some reason and got a very entertaining one.

In the minority I guess but I really liked this. It had its flaws but for the most part were minor. I liked the characters, I liked the atmosphere. I also liked the masks (I know that's pretty shallow but fuck it, reminded me of Army of Two). I liked some of the conventions it broke. I'm iffy at this point on the ending. I thought the violence was actually horrific (in a good way). I don't really see why people don't like it. Because it's "heavy handed?" I thought it was well made.

The cinematic equivalent to a runaway train whose conductor entertains the soon-to-be victims just enough to stay on the train, instead of jumping off. Del Toro is wonderful as that metaphorical conductor, but there is not much else about Savages that I can praise. The only aspect weaker than the awful dialogue is Blake Lively's lackluster performance. I found myself asking WHY they wanted to rescue her *crickets chirp*. Oh! I did not hate John Travolta in this. So, that's good. I think.

I heard jokes about a wargasm, remarks about a buddhist and an ex-Seal that share a beautiful and moron girl and the best herb growers in US, all narrated by this same chick, and I had nothing to complain, because I realized Stone exchanged his political concerns for slick, cheesy and corny filmmaking. Savages is Robert Rodriguez trying to remake Natural Born Killers -- with all those diagonal shots --, or actually Stone trying to look cool again. Such a pleasant disaster, this is.

The dialogue was extremely cheesy at points. Otherwise, it was really great. Violence and humor, interesting characters, and great chess-like maneuvering. I suggest just pretending like you're watching a great foreign film with a terrible translation and you'll probably find yourself enjoying the ride. And I must mention Benicio was at his finest.

Sooooooooooooooooooo disappointed. I like most of the cast and Oliver Stone has certainly created some memorable films in the past, but this was just an icky movie. And, seriously, after watching Blake Lively sleepwalk through Green Lantern and then give a performance equal to that of watching grass grow (yet less exciting and charismatic), it's a wonder she gets cast in anything (I'm assuming it's the boobs). Don't waste your time on this movie.

As an off again on again fan of Oliver Stone, I think this is probably his best, including Platoon. Belongs at the pinnacle of the war on drugs genre along with Blow and Traffic. Casting, screenplay, savage action, dialogue, message and even the very innovative ending are all excellent. Del Toro does the sadistic, if not too bright, enforcer as well as it can be done, and Travolta as the glib, asshole DEA agent deserves the jerk-of-the-year award. But Salma Hayek delivers the most profound line [Full Review]

Sometimes a little too corny with the dialogue, Savages at times focuses too heavily on trying to be different from films of the same nature. In doing so, some of the dialogue just seems forced. Beyond that minor flaw, I thought this film had good R-Rated violence and most of the characters were well written. A few minor changes, and Savages easily could have been a much more menacing film.

Horrible. Characters lack definition. The story is an excuse for excess. There is no reason to care about Ophelia. She's trying to escape the materialistic life her parents instilled but she has no personality. Aside from being a blonde surfer babe who likes to toke, what reason do Chon and Ben have to be with her? Obviously they want to rescue her because they love her, but what about her attracted them beyond surface details? That's all the movie is: a thin surface wrapped in frenetic style.

Story about a couple of pot growing stoners who mess around with a Mexican cartel an get their girlfriend kidnapped. The story/tone is exactly the same as in the books of Winslow ( who also co wrote the script), the acting/directing is average but fine, and the film plays out well, though perhaps 15/30 minutes too long. Great soundtrack though! If your a fan of Winslow, i recommend this. Otherwise , only for the bored nights.

While I loved the two male leads, I couldn't get into O, whether due to character traits (thought she came across as obnoxious) or Lively's portrayal (never had a sense of dread from her over her capture save a line or two). The "wargasms" line was so silly. Not sure how I feel about the cocktease ending. So much love for del Toro, the best Hayek since "Frida", and the best mainstream Stone flick since "Nixon". Many details felt unresolved/tacked on. But see it if you like drugs, sex & violence.

Advertised as an over-the-top thrill ride, it's really a thriller rooted in strategy and character--and perhaps it's better that way. Top-notch acting across the board--Kitsch, Johnson, Lively, Del Toro, Travolta, and Hayek all turn in superb work. Oliver Stone tells this savage tale in customarily vivid style, and co-wrote the tight, twisty script to good effect--the infamous ending doesn't completely work, but it's not enough to dampen the whole. Not quite a great film, but a very good one.
