Lots of comparisons are made between this movie and some Hollywood thrillers. While I understand why the comparisons are made, this movie stands entirely on its own as a unique piece of genre-mixing film making. It's bizarre and fascinating, and the ending is just perfect.

Reasonably interesting, if never exactly good. It's infected, as are many Korean films, by a maudlin stretch so overbaked that it can rival any Hollywood sobfest. The tragedy at the films center is rendered moot by the ending and that Sooni character is so annoying, she threatens to singlehandedly render the experience an unwatchable one (Her stage name in the movie is Gelsomina, which is telling). Several stretches work really well, but too many just don't.

Both contrasting in its beauty and darkness, it's no surprise the director suffered from depression while writing the script. Quirky and strange, it's mind-bending how the narrative finds the time to include emotional scenes that are both flamboyant and enduring. Ultimately, this film both homages the same genre conventions it flagrantly surpasses to tell a hyper-fictional tale rooted in deep themes of human nature, a contradiction that makes the meta-Woodie Allen films look shallow.

Original movie with interesting plot, save for an odd bit or two and the ending which I found unnecessary and dumb. If it wasn't for that, it would have easily gotten some 88/100. I'm still glad I saw it, and would recommend it to anyone, my mom and dad excluded.

Hausu meets Silence of the Lambs meets... Scott Pilgrim? (I only like the first two of those) Whatever it is, it's certainly unique. I'm not one for goofiness, but here it's so over-the-top that it actually becomes somewhat charming. Still, the tragic story at the center of this keeps things from being too ridiculous. It's quite an effective blend of horror, drama and comedy. Definitely an entertaining film w/ a compelling premise and a, well, an interesting visual style to match.

A sloppy mess which includes a lot of unnecessarily sick and nasty violence, and bits of comedy which occasionally work. If there was supposed to be a message to this movie, it was rendered incomprehensible under the blaring sounds of a nonsensical plot about aliens, crossed with the achingly tragicomic cello music. The torture scenes and 2-man struggle dragged on so long that I stopped caring who would win long before halfway. The director's shocks and surprises do not make up for a weak story.

I was disappointed with this one. I thought the premise was great, but the movie gets bogged down with torture scenes and cliched contrivances to extend the torture scenes. Torture in and of itself doesn't really bother me, but for a film that has great moments of originality, the incredibly predictable hour or so of these scenes in the middle of the movie really hurts it.

This is an unexpected treat! All of the hooplah had me thinking that this would be nothing but graphic torture scenes, but that's exaggerated and the film is far more than that. I was kind of put off by the last 25 minutes or so, but I think it works in its own weird way. It's suspenseful one minute, silly and humorous the next, and sometimes tragic. This isn't a mindless exercise in craziness and style, there's some real soul here. Oh, and the end credits are sort of heartbreaking.

An inspired flight of fancy, a schizophrenic hodge-podge of horror, suspense, drama and comedy. The best capsule description I can come up with is Silence of the Lambs meets Terry Gilliam with a touch of Takashi Miike (with a bonus 2001 homage). But doing that robs it of its own uniqueness. Strange and funny, dark and disturbing, sharply stylistic but with proper restraint. Very compelling.

I'm adjusting my original score of 60 after the realization that the final scene of the movie (where Man-Shik is revealed to be an alien) is not real but instead the dying fever dream of Byeong-Gu. This salvages the ending, which I had considered to be a ridiculous copout before thinking longer about it.
