Private Ryan is one of a number of brothers, all of which were killed in combat. It's Tom Hank's job to find him and bring him back home before an even greater tragedy is reached and a mother has no sons. The action, story, and characters are top notch. Great Classic.

The problem with Steven Spielberg films is the dripping, laden sentimentailty he scoops on them, particularly with his ending (see Minority Report for a case in point). This film starts superbly and with good intentions, but by the end is rather mawkish and disappointingly wishy washy in its message.

It's a great movie as far as showing that war is hell, but WWII had so many compelling story lines that Spielberg didn't have to make one up, especially one as ridiculous as extracting the last surviving brother of a family.
