Summary: Opening with the Allied invasion of Normandy on 6 June 1944, members of the 2nd Ranger Battalion under Cpt. Miller fight ashore to secure a beachhead. Amidst the fighting, two brothers are killed in action. Earlier in New Guinea, a third brother is KIA. Their mother, Mrs. Ryan, is to receive all three of the grave telegrams on the same day... A stunning technical achievement with plenty of heart, but plenty of clichés and overwrought performances. It's not the greatest war film by a long shot, and it has trouble even approaching the top tier of that genre. It's entertaining while it lasts, Tom Hanks manages to resurrect the charm he's been missing for most of his career within the entirety of the film, and that's enough to make it half-way decent. It's simply just not an Apocalypse Now or Come and See.

Completely changed the grammar of big budget action sequences. No mainstream film director depicts violence quite like Spielberg, it's very sudden, matter of fact, and unenviable.

The D-Day opening battle alone is enough to mark this as one of memorable movies of all time.
