Summary: Opening with the Allied invasion of Normandy on 6 June 1944, members of the 2nd Ranger Battalion under Cpt. Miller fight ashore to secure a beachhead. A stunning, devastating portrait of war. Spielberg does a phenomenal job of peeling away the many layers of jingoistic mythology surrounding a war Americans remember as a triumph of good against evil, and he recognizes it for what it is: an ugly and horrifying event. Tom Hanks and all the other actors here do a good job, and Spielberg uses every tool in his box to make one of the best war movies ever made.
