The concept is stupid, the acting is terrible and the only reason I don't hate it more is because the twist legitimately surprised me. The fact that this has spawned so many sequels makes me think the cinema-going public deserves the crap it gets, I don't care if that makes me sound elitist. How anyone finds this franchise, or this subgenre in general, unironically entertaining is beyond me.

Great plot, great characters and the storyline has really nice twists into it. Best thing is that the movie makes you think about your life, only few (especially horror) movies are able do that.

There's kind of a grand guignol appeal. Can't see why there should be any sequels, though.

Despite what Saw has become I still stand by the first movie. Carey Elwes carries the movie in my mind. His descent into mindless hopelessness is the story that kept me watching. Danny Glover's revenge was just a bonus. You also can't go wrong with a shameless Mad Max referance. I think it's a shame they ran in the "cash cow" direction with the franchise.

One of the worst lead performances I have ever seen regardless of genre, speaking of Cary Elwes.

A secondhand Se7en, meaning: the concept itself is solid, but nothing else is. There is some ridiculously bad dialogue (which leads naturally to bad acting) and stupid undercranking (which leads naturally to bad editing). The more the story "unravels", the less it makes sense, the less scary it is and the less you care.
