Phil Karlson's newspaper picture suffers in comparison to Fuller's Park Row (Fuller being the source of both screenplays), but it does entertain and is satisfying even if you wished for a little more meat (though less ham from Broderick Crawford). The plot is too far-fetched to be taken seriously --this is definitely pulpy noir type stuff.

A sleazy tabloid editor gets himself in hot water... and has to stop his own ace reporter from exposing him! This is terrific stuff, directed by always-capable Phil Karlson and based on a novel by Sam Fuller. Tight script with a lot of snappy dialogue and sordid details, and good performances all around. Between this and The Mob, Broderick Crawford is growing on me quick. As the noose tightens around his neck, you simultaneously want to see him wriggle out of it and get what's coming to him.

An interesting little thriller with some interesting outdoor photography. Broderick Crawford's heavy is almost sympathetic, and Rosemary DeCamp is threadbare and slightly sleazy in a surprisingly downbeat role.
