My second-favorite swashbuckler (after Mamoulian's "Zorro.") Granger at his best.

Light-hearted swashbuckler that entertains from start to finish. Great swordplay (especially the finale), beautiful Eleanor Parker and Janet Leigh (he ends up with the wrong gal, if you ask me), and a breezy pace. I feel sorry for the real Scaramouche in this movie. The poor guy must be seriously bummed.

a highly enjoyable swashbuckler that is a bit on the lengthy side, but never leaves the viewer bored. this has a good story, and the acting is ok, but that swordplay really stands out. granger should have drawn many more parallels to jimmy stewart other than looks, he's just damned good.

Moderately paced set piece which will leave you swash well and truly buckled. Some rather dry patches lose a little pace mid way through but the story still roles along. Granger is probably at his best here with some technically demanding stunts and very impressive sword fights. The plot could be stronger in parts and the only down-side is a real resemblance to Lena and Lamont's Dancing Cavalier scene (Singing in the Rain) which I struggle to get past.
