In terms of Woody Allen comedy/mysteries, this ranks way above the horrid Curse of the Jade Scorpion and a notch below Manhattan Murder Mystery. Most of the jokes fail, but there's a few good ones. I think part of the problem is that Scarlett Johannsen is not a very good comic actress. Nonetheless, the movie is entertaining and engaging enough to be worthwhile, it's just not especially memorable.

Some of Allen's jokes/ramblings fall flat but most of them are quite funny. It's a pretty entertaining movie. Not great but worth watching.

There's 1 genuine nail-biter of a scene when Johansson's character comes clean about something. It should be the climax, but isn't, w/ another 30 minutes left to go. Allen also managed to cull a couple of laughs from me by placing his familiar caricature in a situation where he has to pretend he's something he's not, but the hit/miss ratio isn't very good. The resolution of the mystery is also unclear & unsatisfying. It's the kind of quirky idea script that needed a lot more rewrites to work.

Scoop is definitely a throwaway Woody movie but it is still good and entertaining. I would only recommend this to die hard fans of Woody Allen. Hopefully this isn't his last acting role.

In this movie, Woody Allen plays a magician who's really horrible at what he does, but everyone seems to think he's really good. Let's just take a long hard think about that, shall we.

Another tepid comedy, not unlike any of the many misfires Allen has presided over in the last decade. Scarlett Johansson, so strong in Match Point, is downright amateurish here. She falls into the common trap of trying to recreate Allen's distinctive rhythms in her own performance, but there's a hopelessly flat quality to her work that's almost uncomfortable to watch. Hugh Jackman and Ian McShane are in it, too. They barely make an impression.

Just terrible. Woody plays himself in a film that barely justifies his character's existence and Johansson is just god-awful. I don't think I laughed once, which is especially pathetic considering the story seems to be full of potential. The problem is that said potential would be best unlocked with some actual style, which Woody deliberately eschews, and is doubly ironic considering he wrote the script. It's like the Romans inventing the steam engine but having no idea what to do with it.

Charming and entertaining, but not as funny on a level of pure comedy as Allen's earlier features. I enjoyed it and it's pretty rewatchable, but it's nothing essential. Woody's character, playing the same neurotic "Woody Allen" character as he always does, was less sharp and funny in this than he ever has been, which hurts the movie, and Johansson isn't funny.

Scarlett Johansson played a nerdy college girl, and Hugh Jackman a rich aristrocrat. Woody Allen was his typical anxiety ridden self, only this time for some reason he was not entirely terrible. Big surprise. While the story was overly contrived, it played along well enough to keep you interested to the end, which was fairly lack luster. Too bad, there were so many other ways this movie could have ended, any of which would have been more creative than this one.

A comedic mystery with a pretty simple story, but consistently funny dialogue. It's certainly worth a watch for Allen fans and though it's not on the level he is capable of, even a lesser Allen script has its rewards. One small issue is that Johannsen is basically playing a younger, female version of Woody, which makes her chemistry with Jackman's character somewhat unbelievable. The theatrical narrative style is appealing though, creating some thoughtful questions about the afterlife.

It was a fun film. A somewhat serious plot presented in a comedic fashion complete with Woody Allen being his usual rambling self. I'm a fan of Scarlett Johansson and Ian McShane though, so that made the film worth watching.

A slight, but consistently entertaining film from Woody. Not all of the jokes hit the target, Johansson's performance is rather mediocre and the premise is hopelessly silly -and yet, there's enough typically dry wit and funny banter to make for an engaging little murder mystery.

On this occasion Allen gets the silliness just right (at least for me) forming a delightful duo with Johansson and with Jackman as an odd villain of sorts (it's an interesting performance by Jackman). The presence of magic in the film can only be a good thing; I wonder what Orson Welles the magician and movie maker would have made of this film? In this way, it's like an extended episode of 'Jonathan Creek (a TV show that I very much like).

Not Woody Allen's best, but far from his worst movie - it's light entertainment, sure, without big revelations, but if you prefer sharp dialogue, Woody Allen and Scarlett Johansson to the hollow action and exercises in style many of today's movies offer, then it's good light entertainment and will make you laugh and smile - which is some achievement!

This is obviously a pretty dumb movie with an absurd plot and no real tension. But on the other hand, there's the novelty of Woody Allen and Scarlett Johansson doing goofs and quips together (the pool scene is pretty funny). Fairly short runtime and the plot has at least one decent curveball. All in all a modestly entertaining C-tier Woody.

It's comforting in its familiarity for those that come to the theater fully expecting the kind of purely entertaining Woody Allen effort that he has spent the last two decades fine tuning, even if he's not trying to be as vibrant or resonant as when he was first staking his legendary claims in filmdom's uncharted territory.

There's something irritating about the role Woody Allen wrote for himself in this film. Unlike similar Allen films, it never really seems like much of a mystery and some of its turns just seem desperate. Still, it's rather watchable.

Interesting story that would have been much more enjoyable if Allen had done a few more passes on the script. The dialogue as it stands is often terrible, and character's reactions and motivations are confusing. This would also probably address the poor acting as well.

"Well did you accomplish anything besides a possible pregnancy?" Well Allen, did you accomplish that possible pregnancy? Seems like that was the only match point for this film - and I do value more Scarlett-centric films, but this one was made by a creepy old man without enough blood supply to his brain. *Preview*: #14#, story, Scarlett.J!/9.

In this one Woody Allen turns the wacky knob up to eleven, and his character is perfectly fitting. It's an extremely well written, and certainly both funny and interesting. My only complain is Johansson who is terrible in this movie. After all these years Woody Allen certainly does have stick-to-it-iveness.

A light-hearted romp of a film. I guess after 40 years people have grown tired of seeing Allen's schtick on screen, and he hasn't acted in one of his films since this. Personally, I always find him delightful, even if he overdoes it a tad here, and it's a shame we probably won't get another chance to see him. Scoop is a funny, throroughly entertaining charmer.

I enjoyed the movie well enough, but I didn't like it a whole lot. The relationship between Johansson and Allen seems a bit strained as well -- there is no reason for these people to be together so often or even enjoy each other's company outside of the fact the plot demands it. This would be fine if the plot was exemplary, but it's not. It's telegraphed and obvious and the characters go against all logic in order to stretch it out a bit further. Match Point this ain't.

The weakest of Woody's Scarlett Johansson trilogy by miles. There's a few amusing bits but the dialogue is pretty nondescript by Allen standards and Allen's character is so, so annoying. I hope he gives at least one more performance because this would be a terrible one to go out on.

Some amiable repartee between Allen and Johansson can't make up for the aimless, rather unimaginative damp squib of a plot. It just kinda wanders from place to place, skipping lightly over the plot contrivances, before ending up pretty much exactly where you knew it would the moment you started watching. Not especially bad, not particularly good, just inoffensive and forgettable.

I was trying to watch this but Scarlet Johansson kept taking me out of the movie with how gratingly fake she was and how poorly matched she is with Jackman. Her acting range seems to have two settings: 1. looking irritated and 2. looking confused. Watch Match Point if you need further evidence (or for the cathartic payoff)
