When we first saw the preview for this movie a buddy of mine turned to me and said "Congratulations Seabiscuit you won the race and solved the Great Depression"! I wish the movie had been that interesting.

Good acting made a story I was nonplussed about seem interesting. I just can't get behind cheering for an animal to beat other animals in racing. It had it's fair share of cheese, but it didn't hit Disney levels of bad. I don't really care to see it again, but it was entertaining enough for one watch.

Sure its cliched and you will feel as if you have seen it and all the characters before but damned if it still isn't done well. The cast is convincing.

Great story told extremely well. There is not anything spectacular about it other than it is one of those perfect movies.

It would be easy to be cynical and jaded about Seabiscuit. The story is predictable, the characters are all too familiar, and the metaphors are heavier than lead. But to hell with cynicism... the movie isn't exactly thought-provoking, but it's as genuinely moving and uplifting as anything in the Capra canon. You'll laugh, you'll cry, et cetera et cetera.

The film has many noticeable and numerous faults, but they are soon forgiven and swept away by the unforgettable and noteworthy acting, mostly from Macy and some by Maguire. The music is really sappy though, and the script can falter from time to time.

It pulls every string, and pushes every button. But most of all, I was distracted the whole time by one of the worst, and most obvious hair-dye jobs on Tobey McGuire...

Other than having the fakest horse-riding effect I've ever seen and having a hugely overrated Oscar consideration, this was just decent. Not something I'd ever want to re-watch.

Leisurely paced underdog saga is ofttimes *too* leisurely paced especially in the flaccid first act; with Bridges and Cooper tamped down, it's left to Maguire to carry the heart of the film, a task which he is not quite up to - but once the story of the horse kicks in, it becomes a predictable but enjoyable ride, almost stolen by underused Macy's brilliantly apoplectic commentator (or maybe its because he gives the liveliest performance!) Nice period design and good spirits get it over the line.

Like a breath of fresh air, Seabiscuit reminds us of the power of good storytelling, more satisfying than any pyrotechnic display or 20 car pile-up.

Despite all the hype, I thought this movie was fairly lackluster. While it's about something moving, and somewhat uplifting, let's not forget: It's about a f****** horse, for God's sake! Oh, and let's not forget: Tobey Maquire is perhaps the most overrated piece of mopey s*** this world has ever known. He absolutely ruins movies for me (including the whole Spiderman series, which were TOO much like the actual comic, btw)

A mix between a feel good movie, a road film and an episode of Champion the Wonder Horse. Based on a true story, the production values are high and the cinematography is very impressive in capturing a feel of the time. A real glimpse into the racing world of the 20th century.

What can you say about Seabiscuit (aside from- "I don't know what the heck a seabiscuit is")? Chris Cooper is my favorite thing about this movie, and I don't know why. Tobey Maguire doesn't seem terribly spectacular to me. I felt like it could have been anybody in that saddle and it would have been just the same. The story was just one that lent itself to emotional pull.

This is Oscar designed, and that feels synthetic. Not "it-turned-the-baboon-inside-out" synthetic, just "oscar-check-list" kind of plastic. Besides. It's kinda Black Beauty with a slightly older kid.

It's a by-the-numbers inspirational sports bio (inspriration factor multiplied times the Great Depression), with distractingly sappy music and over-the-top lines like "I'M BLIND IN ONE EYE!!!!" But it works. The acting is good enough to pull you in and forget about the film's faults, especially William H. Macy as the radio announcer. It hasn't aged well (which, after only 6 years is not very promising in terms of long-term replayability), but it's still an engaging film.

The races in this are nearly as exciting as the real thing. That fact along with the great cast make this film well worth watching. Some of the close-up shots of the actors on horseback are obviously done atop mechanical equine contraptions and sort of look funny. The movie felt longer than it is, but at the same time I thought it could use another half hour to tell its story, or perhaps the structure should've been tweaked.

One of those movies with so many different elements that predispose me to like it. Gorgeous cinematography, wonderful performances from Jeff Daniels and Chris Cooper, David McCullough narration, Depression-era setting, and a spectacular Randy Newman score. I like it, but you might not. This film is also notable for being one of the few to feature a scene I had to watch through my fingers -- the moment when Toby Maguire gets dragged by the horse is fucking brutal. Brutal.
