It's slow to get started, but once it moves beyond the earliest years and into more-familiar territory it becomes what every documentary aims to be: informative and inspiring in equal measure, for comic book fans and novices alike. Perhaps its real highlight, though, is how it seemlessly explains away the high camp that comics have often had in its historical context, making bizarre decisions seem entirely reasonable (albeit often misplaced) in a way that history often forgets. A joy to watch.
