Well acted and written, but the melodrama is very thick.

Impressive psych-drama. A disarming context and setting; in the sense that anything post-mid'60s could not have achieved the same potency.

This psychological ensemble melodrama does not transfer as smoothly to the screen as do the best plays-to-screenplays by Terence Rattigan. Also, it's hard to tell whether the Lancaster/Hayworth subplot is ineffectively written or if it's just their acting that spoils it; Hayworth is wooden and Lancaster is horrid as always. They have nothing on any of the British actors: Niven, more so Hiller, and most especially Kerr, who gives a marvelous performance.
