taps into that good old sherlock holmes nostalgia you didn't know you had. Sherlock the action star works better than anticipated and stays closer to the source material than excepted (not that it is still anywhere close). An okay movie made better by a great cast - I just wish that the beautiful and talented Rachel McAdams could have had a less badly-written part. Also, the plot drags fro sections in the middle.

The performances were the only thing I liked about this movie. The rest just gave me a headache. Slow motion explosions, weird crunchy fight scenes, and I barely understood what was going on with the story other than some mystical mumbo-jumbo. Also, did they overuse the raven symbolism a ton or what?

It's mainly RDJ (and partially Jude Law's chemistry with him) who elevates this just slightly above a throwaway big-budget blockbuster. The plot was sorely lacking in creativity (all the required evidence seemed to come from a single room???), but Ritchie adds just enough verve to each scene to turn it into a harmless and fun ride. Just don't go in expecting the next great Mystery - a treatment that I would have much preferred seeing applied to the revamp of such an iconic character.

Sharp characterization and performances, personal chemistry, and something approaching restraint (for Guy Ritchie, at least) make for an enjoyable piece of Victorian steampunk. It doesn't end up quite playing fair -- there's no way the audience could infer the same things as the great detective -- but it doesn't suffer too much for it. Bring Professor Moriarty on.

Whoa! Double whoa! Guy Ritchie has done it again! Ovo je sve sto trazim od filma. Akcija, misterija, uzbudjenje,
superb acting, superb plot, i otvoren kraj za nove nastavke. Preterano je prava rec. Preterano dobro.

It's moreso a problem with the premise of Sherlock Holmes, but when the audience has no idea what's going on until the end of the movie there's something wrong with your screenplay. Downey Jr. did a great job, though, as always.

Boring and overlong, I spent far too much time checking my watch to recommend this to anybody else. Robert Downey Jr. is good in the lead but the talents of both Law and McAdams are utterly wasted in their limited roles. Guy Ritchie's direction is surprisingly bland too, with any flashes of his energy seemingly lifted straight from his other films (a bare-knuckle fight scene in particular evokes strong memories of Snatch). So instantly forgettable you wonder why they bothered.

Lots of fun and one of the better movies of the holiday season (better than Avatar at least). The plot is rather muddled and depends on several Xanatos Gambits but it's still fun to watch it unravel. Robert Downey Jr is an excellent Holmes and he also kills the English accent. Nice to see an American do it for once! Jude Law is likeable in this movie as well.

Solid enough film, largely because of the chemistry between Downey Jr and Law. I thought they played off each other extremely well. The story itself, while not exactly hokey, seemed to be believable enough in a classic Holmesian way. Ritchie's directing was unobtrusive, though i did find some of the early action scenes to be a bit blurred, and tough to follow with the eye. There are worse things out there to see (When In Rome and Leap Year come to mind).

Brit Ritchie makes Arthur Conan Doyle's Victorian-era detective into an action hero thanks to Downey's vivid (if disheveled) portrayal of a man with a frightening intellect, drug problems, few social boundaries, and fighting skills. Ritchie's problem is he can't leave well enough alone and has to overstuff his pic with too much scenery, action, and CGI though it is entertaining in a frenetic way. But both Holmes and Ritchie need to stop and have a soothing cup of tea.

It's Guy Ritchie making a Sherlock Holmes film, so everyone should expect and embrace the action and fast dialogue. I enjoyed it thoroughly, from the screenplay to the catchy score. Its not your typical Sherlock Holmes movie. The first half is full of action and boring nonsense. The last half comes through with typical Sherlock Holmes analysis and detective work. If you are looking for a run of the mill Sherlock Holmes movies, this is not it. From the looks of it, there will be a sequel.

But no boring investigator that has to uncover a complex plot, no one will watch that crap! Lets make him a boxer and do a lot of mindless fighting." "Wow, you're a GENIUS! Ponderous and predictable, Guy Ritchie's take on Doyle's work seems more interested in cashing in on a franchise than telling a story of worth. With a dimensionless villain and a plot so thoroughly mired in superfluous characters, its hard to build any tension. The stakes are never high and the characters in no danger of growth or development. To add insult to the entire mess, the entire last ten minutes are devoted to setting up a sequel, in leiu of an actual ending or fitting climax.

I can see why the studio might have thought this was a good idea, but ultimately I feel this is a pretty forgettable action flick. RDJ is good but not as interesting as I would have liked. Still, the real problem with the flick start at the script stage. Making a Holmes movie where the villain has "magical" powers is just kind of silly because you know that eventually it's going to be revealed to be something, so why waste the audiences time?

As a heartfelt Conan Doyle fan, I cannot give this film a high rating. Downey Jr. and Law are charming, but they are not faithful to the vision of the original Holmes and Watson. Also, whatever Irene Adler was, she was not a mere trollop; nor was she controlled by any man, even by Prof. Moriarty, the spider at the centre of the criminal web. The supernatural elements of the story distracted from the characterizations of Holmes and Watson.

A modern update akin to 'Batman Begins' for our analytical, pipe smoking slueth. Even down to playing up the main Holmes villain at the end for that sequel plug. Downey and Law have created memorable characters that play off of one another in a masterful way, turning Watson into an actual character rather than someone for Holmes to say "elementry" to. I do have to say I am thankful we didn't have to sit through a meet and greet on the characters. I also love Victorian Steampunk.

A good action/comedy film that, while it makes you forget about everything for those 3 hours, will also get forgotten pretty fast as it's just not anything special. The acting's very decent, and I liked the idea of a not-your-everyday Sherlock Holmes, but the environment seriously lacks detail on some parts and the story could be more firm (although it's an "easy" movie) - plus some characters were really roughly put into the movie for the sake of sequel - namely the Professor.

Extremely fun to watch, Sherlock Holmes sees the birth of what will hopefully be a fruitful franchise. Yes, a sequel would need a bit of work over this film - perhaps a more solid storyline and a bit more mystery (Sherlock Holmes is a detective, after all); but the other basics are all already there - fantastic directing, acting (especially by lead Downy Jr.), great chemistry, a good dose of wit and superb dialogue and not to mention some good action for good measure.
