Pretty damn decent. Drags in parts, but has enough virtues to make up for that. Very much a bestsellerish sort of production, as almost the entire thing is story story story story -- however, this is a good enough story for that approach to work. Consistently intriguing look at 17th-century Japanese culture, and a leading female character that you'd very much like to smooch

The full-length version is infinitely better.

The opening shipwreck scene is incredibly dated and even a little cheesy, but for the most part, I felt the majority of the series was incredibly engaging. As good as Clavell's adaptation proved to be, I feel that an overhaul of the series would be an awesome project for HBO to take on.
