Um dos filmes mais bem dirigidos que já vi, 'Short Cuts' dá a impressão de que seus 187 min de duração são apenas 60 min. A sua fórmula foi repetida inúmeras vezes, como nos filmes do Iñárritu, Magnolia (o terremoto no final de 'Short Cuts' foi adaptado poeticamente em uma chuva de sapos), Crash (medíocre, nada inovador), etc. Destaque para Jack Lemmon que, mesmo idoso e fazendo um papel dramático, diferente das ótimas comédias dos anos 50 e 60, atua em grande forma.

Just didn't grab me. I can't argue that it's a bad film, because it's not. I can't argue that it didn't have unifying themes or interesting enough characters, because it does. It just didn't influence me to feel about any of the characters. Maybe people's lives are really like that, but it seemed to be a carefully selected group of oddities. Just normal enough to seem plausible, but underneath all that really existed was a hulking mass of weird and unlikeable.

A personal human drama focusing on the dynsfuctional and contemporary side of America. The jazz soundtrack really adds to your overall inclination of the film in the end. Altman amplifies and proliferates the overall perspicuity of Carver's already profilic characters until they overflow with realism and individuality. All of the stories are enjoyable and adequately crafted, not one dull moment in the entire length of the film. A true masterpiece and a high point in Altman's career.

It's not exactly Raymond Carver, but it'll do. Besides, it's a great film in its own right. One of Altman's best.

Altman does a hard movie, not many will understand, but I did.

Live and let die in L.A. !

After seeing "Magnolia," I was convinced the human drama couldn't get any better. Was I ever wrong. "Short Cuts" provides the most sincere look into the lives of contemporary Americans that I've ever seen and it does so with fantastic acting and a soothing jazzy soundtrack. It all leads up to the perfect anti-climax. Some might say it all lead up to nothing, but, in my opinion, that's the absolute genius of it. It's just the way life works sometimes.

(2nd viewing) A rousing ensemble piece, every story is jazzy and unpredictable. PT Anderson (being the big Altman fan that he is) probably drew a lot of inspiration from this film. A true image of America (or La-La Land for that matter) ? I can't answer that since I don't live there, but it's an interesting, shocking and at times hilarious one. Together with "The Player", Altman's best. Plus, it's got Downey Jr. playing...Downey Jr., loving it !!!
