Ehhhh. Corny plot, and dull songs. Call me a bad person, but I like the horror pictures that James Whale did a lot better. It doesn't help that I recognize two of the supporting players as two men who are also in the supporting cast of _Island of Lost Souls_, another movie I appreciate much more than this one

Wonderful romance, unforgettable music. Whale also brought the world "Frankenstein."

A very messy film, inconsistent pacing and acting and an ultimately trite story top the list, but it does have some redeeming qualities. Outside of Dunne struggling to hit high notes the songs are pretty enjoyable and Paul Robeson steals every scene he's in. The story also makes a noble attempt at tackling some racial and social issues, even if it does so rather weakly.

One of the great musicals, artfully directed by James Whale.
