Summary: The career of a disillusioned producer, who is desperate for a hit, is endangered when his star walks off the film set. Forced to think fast, the producer decides to digitally create an actress "Simone" to sub for the star--the first totally believable synthetic actress. The "actress" becomes an overnight sensation, with a major singing career as well, and everyone thinks she's a real person. However, as Simone's fame skyrockets, he cannot bear to admit his fraud to himself or the world. (imdb)
People seem to really hate this movie, but it's really not that bad. First half is a pretty clever and funny parody of peoples obsession with celebrities but the second half it starts to fall apart. An uneven film, but not deserving of all the hate I see on here.
This movie is a lot better than people rate it. I thought it had some good philosophy in there and also provided a accurate glance as to what we really idolize here in America.
Part Hollywood send-up and part child of Hollywood, pic shows pitfalls of using gimmicks to sell movies and uses the same gimmick to sell the movie itself. Perfect Tinseltown logic. Writer/director/producer Niccol is in familiar techno-wizardry territory here, but doesn't match his previous efforts.
Yeah, we GET IT.Simone is a HOLOGRAM, but everyone LOVES SIMONE! How can that be? She's a hologram! Yeah, BUT EVERYBODY LOVES HER! And the more the public don't see her, the more they WANT TO see her... Really, this is just about the only thing going on in the movie. This concept might have made a cool foundation for a music video or short film or something, but to spin this out into a feature length film? Even Pacino can't save it. 5 points for the cast and (just) bearable acting.
