The ultimate musical. Delightful in every way. People watching this without a smile on their face should be frowned upon. A fun and lovable masterpiece.
I've seen this flick last time when we've got B&W tv at home. That must be 70-something. I just adore the quick dancing scenes when guys do it together or in solo. All drama and sentimental scenes did not work much for me. Okay, the idea of the story was good and Jean Hagen's high pitch voice, but there was too much of sentimental values I did not fancy. The classical singin' in the rain scene was of course neat.
Good story, good songs, good characters, colour, lights, music, dance... This movie has probably everything a good musical should have, it's an interesting story about the death of silent movies and the birth of a new genre, and has one of the best (if not the best (I'm not that much into dancing) dancers ever. Gene Kelly doesn't even walk like normal people. If it wasn't 1952 I would bet Gene Kelly is CG, because he has to be breaking some physic laws while dancing.
I was ready to give this a perfect score... until the "Broadyway Melody" sequence. What a bloated, self-indulgent scene. Otherwise, this is a great movie.
Never really having been into musicals, I was really impressed and massively entertained by the dancing choreography and especially Gene Kelly's singing is wonderful, the highlight being his Singin' in the Rain song. Choreographically I was most impressed by Donald O'Conner's dancing during his Make'em Laugh song. It's incredibly funny, and really jaw-dropping. Aside from the dancing and singing, the story isn't that special, but it shows Hollywood in an interesting stage of its life.
The best part isn't even the numbers, but the cinematography and colors. Moving the camera in and out on that set with all the Casino lights...amazing. I liked it quite a bit and imagine I would've even moreso if I was into this kind of fruity fare.
What a cute movie. So much romance and the choreography is outstanding though sometimes it drags on a bit too long. I love the song Singing in the Rain, it makes me very happy. Bravo bravo!
