Summary: Monsterlike cranes reign over an inhospitable harbour as prehistorical reptiles. The only human being they accept is a lonesome fisherman. He is to witness a strange encounter between a ship's mate and a mermaid. Imagination or reality? (imdb)

Bizarre and mesmerizing animation, full of darkness and foreboding, though I think the meaning escaped me.

Sirene is another of animator Raoul Servais's odes to individualistic perspectives in an often conformist environment, the director again infusing his rebellious animated techniques with ruminations on audacity alternately mythic, monstrous and political. If the invasion of the more heavy-handed symbolism and under-par animation makes this notably lesser than his other strong work (Chromophobia, To Speak or Not to Speak), it deserves consideration as a modestly Tezuka-esque fairytale rendering.

Something about the environment, industrialization, love and the self-interested, often destructive nature of institutions. I think. It certainly looked cool.

Nice mix of bits that seem purely whimsical, and bits that seem to suggest a social or political commentary. The combination had me running back over various scenes in my head. Of course, the visuals themselves are quite striking.

An inspired and remarkable cartoon, mixing both brutal, desolate imagery in the red world, and magical, delightful imagery in its blue world.
