We weren't sure at first what to make of this, but we developed a theory: we feel that when people committed great crimes against the state, they were forced to watch this.

Would have been a lot better if Woody fully unleashed, cut the slapstick and gone deeper into "Woody vs. Future" parody. Somewhere between a Metropolis and Total Recall gag.

Woody Allen's early films are always frustrating to me when he mixes this genuinely funny and clever dialogue with silly instrumental slapstick. Still, the jokes are thick and fast, and if you don't like one there's another coming right around the corner. Overall very funny, and Keaton is great.

Still hilarious (and now I get jokes that I never got as a kid, like the Keane/Cugat line). A bit too much slapstick, maybe, but maybe I'm being too picky. It's got so many wonderful bits that some slapsticky can be overlooked. And at any rate, it's funny slapstick.

Funny stuff. My only real gripe is about something the film doesn't do rather than something it does: I would've liked to see more stuff along the lines of the scene where the scientist guy shows Woody's character pictures of famous 20th century people, and other things that reference the present from the perspective of the future. I always liked it when they did that on Futurama, and I was hoping for a bit more of it here. Oh well.

aside from a few slightly dull parts, this movie is filled to the brim with entertainment. while not classicly woody allen, his take on the slapstick, and scram comedies is extremely well done. the comedy shines when seeing a man from 1973 deal with technology from the future.

This is among Woody Allen's funniest achievements. The subject matter here is right up my alley, and it's something pretty unique for Allen. His technical work behind the camera is a little rough around the edges this early on, but the heart is all there. The film moves along at a lightning quick pace and doesn't bore for one second. It's well written, but the sight gags are what push it to the next level of hilarity, and it's very reminiscent of silent comedies.

I'm trying to make my way through Woody Allen's pre-Annie Hall catelogue. The only gems I've stumbled across are Play It Again, Sam, and, to a lesser extent, Love and Death, which are genuinely great. Sleeper is probably in his second tier of pre-Annie Hall stuff, but that's not saying much. The situational stuff is a miss, and the visual flair that Allen has in his later work is totally absent in Sleeper. Surprisingly, I found that Dianne Keaton's performance pulled the movie out of the gutter.

Insufferably unfunny. I'd probably prefer root canal treatment to rewatching the farcical parts. And, Diane Keaton: Shut up! Seriously.

I wouldn't call this a sleeper hit, but I stayed awake during it just fine. I wouldn't call myself a Woody Allen fan. Most of the time I think my sense of humor just doesn't align with him. This movie was pretty good though, I liked the cheesy 70's version of their future with robot butlers and orgasmatrons for lovemaking. Some of Allen's acting ranged from stupid to brilliant. The biggest thing that drags this movie down was its overuse of slapstick comedy...

In the all encompassing chaos of the bennyhillish chase scenes and overall frivolity, with the small droplet of hidden intelligence - what feels like the perfect stage for Woody Allen - there is too much of him and he is not funny enough in his silliest, but in his dramatic. Diane Keaton, however, such a subtlety to her acting, she's like a fresh breeze of ease and distinction. It all adds up together in four years. Oh, and 40 years in the future, we are still waiting for robots to happen.

As it is often the case with Allen's "early, funny ones", "Sleeper" crudely alternates witty verbal comedy with mostly unfunny slapstick. But it is Woody, so there are plenty of terrific one-liners and the mild sci-fi satire is consistently amusing. Although I certainly prefer more "serious" Allen endeavors, this never failed to entertain me, but I could have done without the silly physical comedy segments.

"Sex and death - two things that come once in a lifetime... but at least after death, you're not nauseous. " Despite his best efforts, Woody Allen isn't Buster Keaton. But this was still pretty good, lots of good jokes and Diane Keaton is sexy as anything.

Amusing early Woody film dabbles in sci-fi, a unique trait distinguishing it from his other films, but is hampered by an over reliance on heavy-handed physical comedy which aspires to be Buster Keatonesque but requires a lighter touch. Thankfully his verbal wit is on full display with a range of hilarious one-liners; Keaton is also amusing sending up the bohemian hippie movement.

Allen may love Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin, but he's no Buster Keaton or Charlie Chaplin. The slapstick is clumsy and a number of the jokes show their wear with time.

I do not care much for Benny Hill style of slapstick (speeded-up chase scenes and loud ragtime music - Allen composed score for this film, and also played clarinet), but dystopian satire parts (mostly with Diane Keaton in them) are quite good. It lacks the depth of latter Allen films, but it is curious to see unique setting for Woody.

Quite unique entry in Allen's filmography for being a Sci-fi slapstick comedy. In tone, it's closest to his previous fim "Bananas" which also has an unwilling protagonist getting involved in revolutionary actions, to different conclusions. There's some witty dialogue, but it's more of a curiosity than actually being good and IMO would have worked better without the slapstick . The early 70's idea of futuristic design and fashion is quite amusing.

Maybe I just don't enjoy Allen's shtick that much. Sleeper takes classical comedy 'bits' & strings them together in a film that is 1-part political satire, 2-parts slapstick comedy & 2-parts jazz. The film is well-crafted, delivering set-ups & jokes with frequency & intent, and while I acknowledge they should be funny, I just wasn't laughing. Allen, yet again, plays a version of himself. Keaton is a little shrill. And the sci-fi is a backdrop. Perhaps a combination of dated and overrated.

Probably features the best production design of any Allen film that, like Love and Death, hints at a unique comic hybrid form that was abandoned prematurely, before it fully crystallised. Scattershot references to the politics of the day come thick and fast, and there are some extremely funny moments, even though Allen does not consistently balance the incongruous elements. Modern Times it is not, and it ultimately has nothing coherent to say, but it is a fun freewheeling ride.

Woody Allen borrows quite heavily from the silent comedians in "Sleeper" and, although he can't replicate their brilliance, his physical comedy is largely amusing. The futuristic sets are also rather well done. However, the good scenes are spread out and separated by unremarkable stretches of average, almost dull storytelling: the satire is nothing that hasn't been done better before, the romance feels forced and Miles's lines occasionally sound more like stand-up instead of character building.

I liked it but I don't know why. The slapstick/Benny Hill bits aren't funny though there are some funny jokes throughout. The plot is actually good though obviously nothing deep, given it's a screwball comedy. The Allen/Keaton relationship is nice as always and the ending is inconclusive. But despite it all, it gladly kept my attention the whole way through.

One of the few Woody Allen movies I’ve seen where I actually found the plot itself somewhat interesting. Almost disappointed the THX1138 / Logan’s Run style scifi story kept getting butted in on by nonstop frenetic jazz clarinet and classic neurotic Woody jokes that only landed maybe half of the time (though the McDonald’s sign that said “Over 785, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000 served” was pretty funny).
