I really had a great time watching this, although a bit slow, Truffaut does a fantastic job of recreating nearly every type of child, and bringing a great deal of nostalgia. It seems like anyone can relate to this movie, because at one point or another, you were in a sense, one of the children in this film. Fantastic film.

It's pleasant enough, but it really didn't get into it very much at all. It's slow, for one thing, and while the pseudo-episodic format makes for a wide range of experiences, it also makes the entire thing pretty fleeting. It's a good movie, just not one I particularly care about.

A realistically and tenderly portrayed testament to the great director's belief in childhood as a "state of grace."

Another Truffaut powerhouse. This film actually does what the first few Antoine Doniel films did but all in one movie and near flawlessly (there were definite pacing problems with how he presented it) as unconventional as he can do it. The biggest problem also lies with how it relates to the Antoine Doniel films: no Antoine! That's pretty much it, other than that it's a great standalone film.

ultimately well made, but unfruitful. the simple fact is that the movie itself is unfocused and at times boring. i tend to dislike incoherent naratives and this fits in with the rest--only the technical aspects are better.

Truffaut is one of the most pleasant directors that I really don't care about at all.

Essentially a comedy, but the loose narrative structure makes it slightly unclassifiable. Truffaut peppers the film with a handful of little eccentricities (for example, the amusing newsreel) that make it unconventional. Naturally, there is no one character as fleshed out as Antoine Doinel, but we do get a broader range of the childhood experience... from first kisses to child abuse to classroom antics to petty theft. An enjoyable work, though admittedly it didn't bowl me over.

Once again Truffaut demonstrates his keen childhood sensibilities. The frank simplicity allows the film a nostalgia anyone can relate to. He manages to depict many different types of children in varying situations, yet none of them feel alien or false. The entire film is just one great sequence after another, with that trademark light Truffaut charm. My only notable complaint is the pacing, as it feels much longer than it actually is.

At turns delightful, funny and poignant, this is one of the best films to focus on the day-to-day realities of childhood. Truffaut's filmmaking is seamless, crafting a coherent whole out of the many characters and their often surprising interactions.
