Summary: Born into an impoverished life in Jamaica, Hortense longs for a fulfilling life in England. The door of opportunity swings open, Hortense marries Gilbert and on her way to the promised land of post-war Britain. Steadfast dreams are tested by the hard realities of racism and poverty. Their only saving grace is Queenie. But Queenie faces her own disillusionment, married to the kind but dull Bernard.
