Bergman doing a sex comedy. It isn't something that makes me laugh a lot, but it's charming, bittersweet and altogether highly enjoyable. The story enables Bergman to play with an unusually large central cast, which brings out qualities I wouldn't normally associate with him but I'm glad to know he has. The only thing that knocked it down a notch was the music, which was... unfortunate.

Good enough but hard to recommend for anyone. It's also not as funny as people say it is but still an enjoyable watch. Sometimes it gets too melodramatic for its own good. I really enjoyed all the women characters in this film

The main draw here is the snappy dialogue. The only minor fault I had was towards the end, where the film started to become a little too farcical/melodramatic (although it seems to be a very real possibility that it is self-referentially so.)

Harriett Anderson is one of my favorite actresses and she is especially wonderful here. In fact, the entire cast is well developed and varied. It's a little light and warm for my tastes, but this is still about as insightful and moving as you'd expect from Bergman. The closing speech is especially lovely.

The closest in Bergman's work, unless I find any more in his filmography, to a romantic comedy, one which is charming and very witty. It also bridges the gap to his later works dealing with the serious themes of faith and one's existence, bubbling under the surface in such a very charming comedy and occasionally rising up.

A fun, warm film by Bergman, with some hints at darker themes he would tackle later. All the characters are fully developed and treated with equality, something so often lacking in other films, which makes it feel refreshing even today. No wonder this was such a success.

The beauty of his films lies in the fact that everyone will find something for himself. if it's ambitious and deep films that You like, check his later work. On the other hand if You're looking for something more heart-warming and simple than look no futher.

A delightful, sumptuous film that, like a good wine, has aged remarkably well: starts with a light body but finishes strong, runs pleasantly with great legs and contains complex notes of Lubitsch that don't overpower the welcome simplicity of the Bergman. Hints of wild strawberry pair well with a hearty meal; perfect to share on a date.

Love is a battlefield.

The only person I've seen mix comedy, philisophical prose, and romance this well is, ironically enough, Woody Allen.

Ever wondered what a Bergman comedy would be like? Watch this and you won't be disappointed. It's still identifiably Bergman, but it has great wit and a fun style throughout, reminiscent of the best 30's romantic comedies.

The obnoxious music blaring (can't believe that was left in) is the only thing keeping this from the best work of Bergman. Quite an unexpected experience, both in its levity, and how it can balance these moments with ones of more depth. The piece on the 'smiles of the sun' along with its subsequent musings are marvelous - one of my favorite Bergman moments - and I just love Harriet Andersson and Eva Dahlbeck in this.

Smiles of a Summer Night starts off a little on the slow side and takes a while for it to really ever become like a Bergman film, but when it finally does it's definitely excellent. It's easy to classify this in a lower tier of Bergman films, but by most realistic standards, Smiles of a Summer Night is a great movie.

Warm and very very funny, with just enough cynicism and sadness to remind you who you're dealing with.
