The film is routine as far as women's pictures go, though the film eschews the usual trajectory of an "other woman" scenario. Director Clarence Brown certainly anticipates his later work with Garbo here but the real star is Pauline Frederick. The silent star juggles a few obligatory pantomime theatrics with a pronounced naturalism uncharacteristic of her many contemporaries.
