Decent film, which takes time and effort to develop the cahracters, including their not-so-nice aspects. Gets you thinking: how do I do these things?

I liked it because Douglas is my favorite ladies man. I liked it because it's a good story for those who need to learn a lesson. I liked it because Imogen Poots and Marie-Louise Parker are in it, but mostly because of Imogen. Eisenberg seems to be an eternal college kid.

Unnaffected and unsentimental, Ben Kalmen might be the most unpleasant character Douglas has ever played: as an old man who considers love just a business transaction, he's the perfect example of the lack of humanity in post-modern society, where everything, even love, is reduced to figures. I guess I just wrote some moral crap here. I don't know. I just loved Kalmen.

Take Michael Douglas's character out of Ghosts of Girlfriends Past put him in a drama with any significant charm or humor without upping his believability much and that is this film!

Michael Douglas is very good in this movie. The lead character is not very likeable but Douglas still makes it work. This is a nice character piece with not a lot of plot. The rest of the cast are good in supporting roles.

A very good Michael Douglas performance, but the script has problems, particularly that final hint of a transformation in his character and the simplistic assumption that all of his irresponsible behavior can be explained by a fearful reaction to one medical test six and a half years ago. The movie--and Douglas--have taken great pains to show him as a narcissistic, womanizing prick, and even the guardedly optimistic ending the script allows him is a little too comforting, a little too pat.

Until the woefully inadequate ending, Solitary Man was a fine film ostensibly concerned with one man's Pyrrhic attempt to combat the brutally forced-upon expectations of living that come with aging. Persons past a certain age are generally stymied into a responsible and consistent existence absent of flavor or color. Douglas's Kelman fights a war against this process and meets exactly the type of crushing resistance and has precisely the kind of finite success you would expect him to have.

Michael Douglas and his sly performance provides audiences with a definite reason to see 'Solitary Man.' A depressing look at a sad life, Douglas shines---and while he never had my sympathy, he creates a memorable performance deserving of Oscar recognition. As a drama, this is old-hat stuff, and the kind of movie filmmakers throw together for awards. Luckily Douglas' performance transcends the Oscar bait material, and the supporting actors are solid as well, making this an easy recommendation.

Less of a plot than a downward spiral, Solitary Man is a pretty pointless film. The old cliches of the old guy who bangs every hot girl he meets, reeks of writer's wish fulfillment more than gripping story and the inevitable sour consequences are so cliche as to be laughable. This is an episode of two and a half men without the laugh track.

Enjoyable until the film takes an easy out at the very end, as it gutlessly contrives an open question in a film that is quite thoroughly a response. Douglas' Kalmen is a sharp, albeit unbelievably forgiving, delight as he fills the screen, complemented effectively, if occasionally, by Sarandon's Nancy. I really appreciated Kalmen's peculiar cynicism, as he fights to care more about the people he is pushing away.

A refreshingly negative and pessimistic experience. I realized watching this that I haven't seen a new Michael Douglas movie since Wonder Boys in 2000, but I gotta say he's still got it. Always an entertaining dude to watch.

More entertaining than Wonder Boys. Douglas is great as the charmer who finally runs out of charm. Some nice little moments when the camera lingers on his face, which says it all.

For reasons I can't quite explain, I have found that as he has got older Michael Douglas has become a much more engaging and generally palatable actor to watch? In "Solitary Man" he is exceptional and very charasmatic. The support cast is good too, and the script solid, in what is all-in-all a well made and engaging drama, even if I cannot quite make up my mind as to if I liked or disliked the ending.

An above average and surprisingly moving dramatic film about choices and their subsequent consequences as one struggles with a misguided attempt against being relegated to the corner with an effective performance from Douglas. It is, however, slightly marred by an abrupt, lazy ending.
