A história abordada é interessante e ela conseguiu que eu sentisse um pouco do que o personagem estava vivendo. Porém, achei que abusou bastante da minha paciência. O ritmo é muito lento.

It is hard being a celebrity. It is also hard for Sofia Coppola to make films with substance. But seriously, running off the blueprint of Lost in Translation, Somewhere gets only a few of the former's unique attributes right. Dorf's empty-shell performance is so...nothing, that there is little for the viewer to hold on to. Don't get me wrong, Coppola is a great poet, but maybe I'm old fashioned in that I need at least some semblance of plot.

Sofia Coppola succumbs to temptation to film cars driving on a freeway as a deep metaphor about life. Ever since I saw Breillat's Fat Girl I was afraid of seeing this ever again. When did Sophia become so pretentious? It's her fourth film, and yet she acts like a spoiled rich kid straight out of film school making an 'art' film. The last smirk of Dorff makes me wonder: do we just got trolled?

The movie starts with a car going around in circles on a track, we later see the protagonist falling asleep (over about five minutes to two pole dancers doing a lifeless routine. Later things start to occur (around the 40 minute mark) but I can't be sure how well they'd hold up if they weren't following the agony of 40 minutes of characterizing the protagonists life as aimless. It would work considerably better as a short.

Very prosaic. It surely takes its time in most scenes... a bit too much time in my opinion. It has its moments, though.

Coppola initially hints at something bigger, which makes it only more disappointing when one realizes you're watching a watered-down Lost in Translation.

90 genuinely sad minutes of cinema, a film about ennui that is gently compelling in its deglamourisation of Johnny's somehow banal Hollywood lifestyle, an honest and quietly heartbreaking look at the mistakes anyone can make, at how you don't see these mistakes even as they're staring everyone else in the face, and how you can all of a sudden become startlingly aware of them. Tender, melancholic and very rewarding if a bit clumsy.

Ok so it's not Lost In Translation but it is very similar, so similar in fact some shots in this seem recycled from LiT. A good film in its own right though, some beautiful scenery and an interesting story. I expected it to be boring (based on a lot of reviews) but actually it flew by; mainly because it was so nice to look at. It definitely lacks the magic LiT had and the ending was a little bit questionable but overall I thought it was great.

While this film was hard to watch at times because of the pacing I really feel that in the end it succeeded at being a thought provoking film dealing with how monotonous our lives can be and how the people we love can change our outlook on life.

So, how much did I enjoy myself watching Somewhere? Yeah, not at all. It's not as if the movie is insubstantial, but I felt that the point would be made, and then the car would drive around the track an additional 5 times. The point would be made, but then we get to sit back and watch the ENTIRE duration of the worst strip show ever. Twice.

I know I should give it a "70" but I just love Coppola's work. Without Murray, Johanson or the night life in Tokyo, you would think that "Somewhere" isn't ANYWHERE near her earlier movie.... and of course you're right. However, Coppola succeded (again) in making us like a movie star, whose daily routine is ordering pole dancers to his hotel room, having sex with all the pretty ladies and doing whatever he pleases, and why do we feel sorry ? Because we know he looses a lot more.

Sofia Coppola attempts to create a winning streak from her past works, yet this one does not hit it's mark. An exploration in rich ennuie of the 1%, it would have done wonders if the characters were actually shaped to be cared for.

I liked it. However, I can also understand why a lot of people would think it’s boring. It’s slow and not much happens. Coppola isn’t afraid to let shots linger, and I like that. So, yeah, not her best, but I liked it.

I was really surprised by how much I liked this movie. I'm confused by Ebert's review making the observation that Dorff's character just goes through the motions with his daughter without any feeling; I got the impression the father and daughter were very much in love with each other and were only truly alive and enjoying life when together. I expected a movie about bad parents and broken relationships and was pleasantly surprised to find a movie about a great father and daughter relationship.

It is entirely too similar to Lost in Translation but Lost is also one of my favorite films so I don't mind that much. While 'slow' is one way to look at it, there is a method to the madness in that it is necessary and correlates to the film's overall story and message: Isolation, loneliness, a lost sense of purpose, and being forgotten. It needs a whole new ending, though.
