Summary: Mukul (played by Kusal Chakravarty) is a young boy who is said to be able to remember events of his previous life. He stays up late into the night and draws sketches that he claims are of battles he had seen. His father decides to take him to Dr. Hajra (Sailen Mukherjee), a parapsychologist, for treatment. On studying some drawings by Mukul that represent scenes from the past, Dr. Hajra concludes that Mukul's drawings as well as his desciptions are of events around a fortress, where the boy's father(sic) had worked as a gem cutter... Ray's first "Felunath" detective story (the other one being Joi Baba Felunath) is a real hoot. Suprisingly suspenseful and exciting with fairly intricate plotting and engaging characters. Some of the humor was lost on me because it depended on linguistic oddities, but for the most part it works beautifully. Not a typical Ray film by any means (except for Soumitra Chatterjee), but a fun one. The action, the suspense, and the comedy come together beautifully.
