I liked it a lot (yes, even with Adam Sandler's sleepwalking acting). Delightful and refreshing, and not corny like how the usual romantic comedies are. Paz Vega, of course, was heavenly.

This is a very fun film, and one of my favorite Sandler performances... Tea Leoni is brilliant as always... Great ensemble chemistry really makes this work... Cloris Leachman is perfect, too...

There's an interesting film about the immigrant experience somewhere in here, but Brooks tries to juggle too many characters and perspectives, ultimately finding himself in the centre of a big mess. It's pleasant enough though, and Paz Vega is a pleasure to watch. Tea Leoni wins Best Performance by an Actor in a Thankless Role, any year.

Adam Sandler should not try to act without PTA's direction - it's pathetic - some of the worst writing I've come across, as well.

adam sandler in a movie called spanglish should be funny right . . . wrong. I don't want to see Adam Sandler in a serious movie - that is not what I expect when picking up a comedian's movie.

Frustrating family drama has the kernel of a good movie in its folds, but is too scattershot and inconsistent in its tone and message - Leoni has some great moments, but her strident caricature belongs in a farce; Sandler is closer to the slice-of-life tone Brooks is striving for, but his character (and arc) is fairly dull and rote, and finally Leachman is fun but basically wasted as the sitcom incorrigible Granny, with a zinger for every occasion. Disappointing given all the talent on display.

simply because i hate tea leoni. the director should have decided through whom the story should have been told, it was written as a retrospective from a very minor character and told from the POV of the mother. strange.

I loved this movie. Adam Sandler is great in it as John Clasky, as is Paz Vega as his housekeeper, Flor. I laughed, I cried, etc., though I wasn't ever sure why John's wife Deborah (played by Tea Leoni) was the way she was. I liked the focus on John's character and the development of his relationship with Flor.

Americans don't tend to make good family dramas/comedies, or at least haven't for decades. There is a tendency towards either canned melodrama or sitcom style theatrics. Spanglish does not totally avoid these traps, but it deserves some credit for at least attempting to create a situation where two families from different cultures and classes develop a degree of affection for each other without completely glossing over their differences, even if it is ultimately quite superficial and timid.

The broad strokes of the writing may be off, but Brooks can definitely write dialogue. It's "sentimental" in that it reaches for something heartfelt, which is commendable and carries higher degree of difficulty than the typical hopeless nihilism that sets the standard for "realism" these days.

Surprisingly poignant character study of a dysfunctional well-to-do LA family through the point of view of their nanny's daughter. Since I'm immersed in the world this movie portrays (filmed in my neighborhood), I can attest that it's spot on accurate.

I don't know about you, but when a movie is billed as a romantic comedy, I kinda expect some romance and some comedy. This movie had precious little of either. Romance: none, unless you count the brief flirtation between a married woman whose husband has left her and a married man whose wife is a self-absorbed, insensitive, raving lunatic who just admitted to having an affair. Comedy: none. Oh, wait, the dog did knock over the game table, so there's something.

I thought this was very enjoyable, despite its bittersweet ending and the lack of cinematic flair. I liked the plot, the writing, the acting, etc. It's nothing special, it's just good at what it sets out to do. I also found the premise of the cultural divide, and the mother's concern that her daughter would lose her sense of culture, pretty interesting.

I'm excited for this review cause it's the only time I can say a Hollywood movie didn't accurately portray white people. Also no duh, the movie also is horrible at portraying Mexicans. No one learns lessons, everyone still ends up a shitty person or an even shittier person. Also I know illegal immigrants, they all want their children to succeed, so the life lesson the mom instills in her daughter is probably the worst end to a movie I've ever seen

A good diversion from Adam Sandler's routine. This movie has great heart and a terrific little story involving a household and the beautiful and charming Mexican maid that walks into their lives.
