Summary: Based on the classic 1960's Japanese animated series chronicling the aspirations of a young race car driver as he attempts to obtain glory, with the help of his family and the Mach 5, the advanced car created by his father. (cinema.com)
Thorough good entertainment, especially for the kids both old and young. If you liked even a bit of racing, the whooozzzzing experience, you will love this film. Visuals is 'the' strong point of Wachowski bros. This film is visually brilliant: with saturated colors and out of the world futuristic, plasticky cartoonistic feeling that I think actually ends up lending credibility to the wtf! moments in the screen play. Good film. Simple moralistic tale told beautifully and with a lot of zestful fun
Enjoyed this a lot more than most people did. Think it did well in capturing the essence of the cartoon. Out of this world cars, stunts, race tracks and characters. In the climax, i felt good when Speed finally became the driver he was born to be. Colors of this film may cause seizure though. be warned.
This is a great movie. This is one of those occasions when I feel the critics were dead wrong. Yes the movie is silly, the plot nothing special, but its a film based on a cartoon. Its called "SPEED RACER" for Chirst's sake. A colorful mind blowing assault on your senses. A film I hope becomes something of a classic with age. A must own Blu-Ray (i'm sure the dvd is ok, but blu-ray has the whole package). Do not listen to critics and see this with an open mind. You wont regret it.
I don't think it's possible to make something that more lives up to the billing of "live-action cartoon." The hyper-stylized effects and mile-a-minute pace make this a thrill ride from start to finish, and while I understand its detractors, I can't deny I had a blast with it (or at least the car chases). I regret not seeing it in theaters.
A colorist's orgasm. It's difficult for me to critique this as I would other films, as the incredible strength of it lies solely in a kinetic experience. To this end, it may be unparalleled; a perfect confluence of color and movement, tightly edited into transcendent action sequences. Everything else is inconsequential; the cast is overqualified and the film seems to be use them for the sole purpose of having real world textures and objects to paint every color of the day-glo rainbow. Brilliant.
This is a perfect live-action, modernized recreation of the original anime. It looks and feels like a cartoon, which is good because almost nothing about this film belongs anywhere near reality. The effort the Wachowski Brothers put into preserving the kitschy spirit of the original series has been tragically misunderstood and overlooked. The only thing that really held it back for me was Hirsch's weak, breathy delivery. Apparently no one told him that the film was supposed to be fun.
Forget the (awful) cartoon it's based on, this triumph of editing and effects pays tribute to the medium of film itself. Truly deserves being seen on a big screen. Sadly weighed down by lack of substance (although the struggle between art and business isn't a bad foundation) and too much comic relief.
Opening was a little sloppy, with exposition that even leaves insiders' heads spinning. But once everything was clumsily set up, they knocked 'em down. Excellent casting and I found the kid/monkey less annoying than the TV series; dare I say I enjoyed their antics?
The Wachowski's deserve credit for creating something entirely new here. It's a real life cartoon. Maybe too long and drawn out for kids and too simplistic to really engage adults it still has more then enough kinetic energy to pull it along. Visually stunning it feels like a complete vision. Plus John Goodman AND a monkey!
"Speed Racer" is an incredibly beautiful treat for the eyes, if just a little numbing for the brain; it's based on a cartoon after all. The performances are generally good, although Matthew Fox is still annoying, and the direction fits the story perfectly. Basically it's just a really cool movie.
This film is way more intelligent than people give it credit for. It's a dazzling spectacle from start to finish without compromising its vision. The acting and dialog is hammed up as per the original cartoon and it is consistent with the strange surreal world they exist in. The complex CGI and strange characters only adds to the bizarre nature of this film.
