MUST get marks down for the most atrociously unrealistic skiing scenes ever. Straight down the hill with no turns at all? 3 inches apart? At a cliff that has no warning signs? Just as in Vertigo and North By Northwest, this film suffers from serious implausibility problems.

Takes too long to start, is a little too long in the tooth and a little too literal. But once the plot sets in motion, it's a good ride with some nice quirks.

typical of hitchcock's lesser works in that despite being annoyingly literal, shamelessly pulpy and completely and utterly ludicrous, it's weird enough to be consistently fascinating anyway.

The romance is a bit contrived, but c'mon, it's Ingrid Bergman, who wouldn't fall madly in love after about 15 minutes? The plot has it's problems too - with a rather basic portrayal of psychoanalysis - but I found the film as a whole quite engaging. Peck's character is mysterious, and at times quite sinister, and there are enough clues planted in the right places to make for a satisfying outcome. The surrealist dream sequences are also quite entertaining.

It's a pity the script is so corny and oftentimes camp, and that the psychoanalysis is downright ludicrous, because this is a pretty fine production. Hitchcock's direction is obviously spot-on, the cast is great and the Dali dream sequence as well as a few other scenes are, well, spellbinding. The same can be said for the score which is instantly memorable. A pretty poor story is made in to a good film for these reasons, but there was much more potential here.

Are you kidding me? Everything seems so forced... It's hard for me to believe that this was directed by Hitchcock. Liverwurst at a romantic scene??? It made me laugh so much... I think I am not clever enough to get this movie. It's more a comedy than anything else and a boring one, despite the fact that I am very fond of Peck and Bergman.

This is a good film, but not one of the better Hitchcock films I've seen. The way in which it depicts women and psychology are pretty old-fashioned, the score is a little too melodramatic, and it's a bit long, too. Although Bergman and Peck are fine, their romance isn't very believable. Still, there are some absolutely brilliant shots from Hitchcock and an amazing dream sequence designed by Salvador Dali. It's got enough good things to be worth seeing, but I don't think I'd watch it again.

Good, not great. The Dali dream sequence makes it worthwhile, though.

"Spellbound" is vintage Hitchcock and the earliest classic in his filmography. This is one of his most visually playful films as he often gets to to display his phenomenal directorial abilities (the amazing dream sequence) and innovate many techniques that have proved influential. Although the psychology stuff is a bit dated, the script is quite solid overall, the love story engrossing, the plot involving and the performances decent enough, but Hitch's movies never were about the performances.

Overwrought melodrama from Hitch has its pluses, including a chilling performance from Leo G. Carroll, but film is too dry and talky to generate the usual excitement from The Master. Salvador Dali dream sequence is another highlight, but Peck and Bergman lack chemistry together and the plot, and eventual solution, make little sense. Hitch's mastery of the camera is muted here, with the exception of a few wild POV shots, and an unforgettable finale featuring a gun barrel. Disappointing.

Interesting use of dream theory. Dali dream sequence is by far the most memorable part of the film - everything else fades in the background.

There's some nice camerawork and a wonderful dream sequence, but there are problems, too, such as the miscast Peck and the ridiculous way the plot falls into place. Middle-tier Hitchcock.

Surprisingly inert for something that's supposed to be one of Hitchcock's classic films. The on-screen romance is a little dull (Bergman, a beautiful but often boring actress, necessitates a stronger partner than Gregory Peck) and there is a phenomenal lack of suspense and intrigue. The highlights are a good score and some unforgettable shots (esp. the glass of milk and the gun barrel).

Once you take off the Hitchcock blinders this movie becomes a cartoonish depiction of mental illness crossed with a silly whodunit. Still, not terrible for a movie made 70 years ago.

Insane and occasionally baffling in its tone. Peck alternates between aggravatingly aloof and relatively charming. Dated with one of Hitchcock's worst trends where every conceivable aspect of psychobabble is explained. But it's visually excellent and entertaining for the bulk of its runtime.

"I take it the supply of linen at this institute is inexhaustible!", a hilarious line from Peck early on, gave me hope that there would be something redeeming in this unbelievable plot of an esteemed psychologist instantly falling in love with a suspected murderer. Alas, the only things redeeming are a few of Hitchcock's wonderful first-person shots, and the fantastical Dali dream sequences which unfortunately only take up a few minutes of screen-time.

Average decent Hitchcock with cute cinematography and the famous Dali dream sequence, which is overrated but still good. The trashy psychoanalysis references are fun too.

Hitchcock returns to the theme of psychoanalysis that reared its head in films like Murder! This time he beats you over the head with this theme and it actually works quite well, barring the occasional extended exposition with the character made to look like Sigmund Freud. The second half of the movie was far better than the first. It is worth watching just for the milk scene, the dream sequence, the ski scene, and the final reveal. Man, Hitchcock does suspense like no other.

Uneven at times, but delightfully absurd that everyone just assumes that Gregory Peck is a famous psychiatrist and really just complains behind his back when they don't like him. A little too true to life to be fair.

Very entertaining and, yes, the ideas of psychotherapy aren't exactly right in this film and the love story is terribly forced and not even close to being believable. But, all Hitchcock wants is to entertain and you'd be a fool to disregard his excellent directing in this film. So, even though the story telling isn't the greatest, this movie is still worth seeing.

I wouldn't say this was Hitchcock at his sharpest. While a well-toned story, there are times where the pacing is a bit slow. The excitement is mainly psychological. But you have those very Hitchcock touches. Some of them very gimmicky, like the in-drink shot or the climax gun hand. Seemed he was having some fun in ways to film a lot of the scenes. A milder Hitchcock chase, and just going along with the puzzle this was, it was a trip I respected a lot. Respected more than loved.

In a modern perspective, the psychology of the movie seems "a bit old fashioned" to say the least. But if the premise is accepted, it's an interesting (albeit uneven and jaggedly paced) thriller. It gets bonus points for the Salvador Dali designed dream scenes.

There's a great story involving a psychotherapist hired by producer David O. Selznick to serve as a technical adviser. The woman pointed out a problem with some aspect of the story, a complaint to which Hitchcock responded, "My dear, it's only a movie." Whether true or not, the story is telling. Like other works of his which boasted sensational, medium-bending elements, Hitchcock can sometimes seem like he's just marking time with the scenes that fall outside of the splashiest parts of the film.
