Summary: In a dilapidated rural mansion, the last generation of the degenerate, inbred Merrye family lives with the inherited curse of a disease that causes them to mentally regress from the age of 10 or so on as they physically develop. The family chauffeur looks out for them and covers up their indiscretions. Trouble comes when greedy distant relatives and their lawyer arrive to dispossess the family of its home. (imdb)

Spider Baby falls into the trap (or should I say web?) that a lot of older horror films tend to: it's just plain boring for the most part. Some of the acting is alright, but the majority of it takes the same ham-fisted approach that pops up so often on episodes of MST3K. Maybe worth seeing for late Lon Chaney, Jr. role or an early role for Sid Haig, who steals the show, but otherwise entirely forgettable.

Ah, Sid Haig. From creepy bald man-boy, to creepy bald mobster thug, to creepy bald space ninja, to creepy bald freak show proprietor...is there any creepy bald part he cannot play?

One of the most suprising and enjoyable movies i've seen in a very long time. Yes it's demented, twisted and trashy as hell but thats whats makes it so much fun. It's shocking, even by today's standers, and at times, very very creepy. I fell in love with Spider Baby the moment i watched it and it remans a firm favourite of mine. A cult classic in every sense.

Wonderfully perverse. Though the film is dated and could use a modernizing face-lift, it does deliver some genuinely creepy moments.

This movie clearly influenced films such as the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Rob Zombie's first two films. The flick is decently creepy in many ways, although it does drag a bit and the budget limits are pretty evident. Still I was fairly entertained, and I really am looking forward to viewing even more of Jack Hill's films. I have to say that the daughters in this film were fairly freaky and deranged in a The Shining twin girls sort of way.

Campy fun with a young Sid Haig and an old Lon Chaney Jr. The ending sequence is hysterical.

Not excessively gory or violent, just completely insane. All the more awesome an achievement considering that it's from Jack Hill, who usually makes crap, and even inflicted the "babes behind bars" genre on the world with _The Big Doll House_. A certain influence on George A. Romero and John Waters

This was a real treat. Didnt know what to expect going into this, but the opening scene with the mailman pretty much set the tone. An excellent balance of campy comedy and shock horror. Somehow, this film delivers more for me, as compared to the boring slasher flicks. There is very little on-screen violence, but through pacing, sets and lighting, this film really does creep you out at times. Carol Ohmart was probably the "it" girl for this flick, but Jill Banner as Virigina really did it for me.

Wow, what a wild and fun movie this turned out to be. A clear influence on Rob Zombie's "House of 1000 Corpses". Lon Chaney Jr. is great in his (almost) final role and Carol Ohmart wears her lingerie VERY well!

An Armond White-loving friend likened this to a mash-up of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Adams Family. And really, I can't think of a better description. Completely wild and off-the-wall for something from this time -- and the strange mixture of sudden, shocking violence and way-out comedy (loved the uptight, crew-cutted visitor) definitely works. I would be remiss if I didn't mention the awesome opening titles and "theme" song. Can't wait for the inevitable and sure to be awful remake!

Like all great cult films this singular experience is not 4 every1. Suprises while somehow balancing off-the-wall comedy & horror.Yes, it's jokey but scenes designed 4 scares r lit & staged 4 maximum creepiness& despite its strangeness, the actors manage2 draw an emotional connection 2 some of the most unhinged characters in cinema. A hybrid of the Adams Family & the Texas ChainsawMassacre shouldn't work, but 4 those interested in well-crafted oddities this most certainly does. Gleefully crazed!
