Summary: An out-of-control speed freak (Schwartzman) is introduced his drug of choice's creator (Rourke) by his dealer (Leguizamo). A massive three-day adventure ensues (with Fugit, Murphy, and Suvari in tow). (imdb)
Despite the twitchy editing, despite the many moments that seem 'inspired' by other drug-related films, and despite the story that in essence goes nowhere, I was still entertained. The style somehow didn't get on my nerves and there are a few memorable moments that got a grin out of me.
Majority of the acting was nice (well, except the lead and poor cop parody) and I liked most of the quick cuts and animated parts, but what failed here was directing and the plot. Åkerlund's characterizing was not funny and he ought to find a decent story behind. Sadgirl and her co-worker were sexy and wored hilariously together. And the peaceful ending Åkerlund nailed to the point.
The last thing the world needs is another film about junkies. The photography is nice at times and the acting is pretty good (except the very annoying main character), but watching a bunch of degenerates live yet another day of their plotless lives is not a good foundation for a film. The fast-edit drug hit effect is overused and boring; seems as though the director/editors thought it would make the movie "stylish" or something.... trying a bit too hard guys.
The best part of this film is that it captures the screwed up surreal mindset of an addict. All of the characters are both oblivious and delusional towards what they are, or it's simply beyond them to care (which is kind of a measure of how "far gone" they are). But really, it's over the top and feels completely detached from the type of world it seeks to represent, instead substituting it for an overexaggerated caricature. The story flows like a comic book, and not a very good one at that.
This movie is interesting, there are many quirky characters. This is not the best movie out there on the subject of drugs, but it is entertaining and very funny at times
A look at the life of a speed junkie. Well acted, cleverly scripted and with excellent pacing, this movie delivers. Tho it suffers from a mediocre director; the appeal of the movie fades a bit in the third act , its hardly noticeable. An entertaining watch. For anyone who enjoys seeing Mickey Rourke, Britt Murphy or John Leguizemo do their thing.. they're all excellent in this movie!
